The Black Kids burst onto the indie rock scene in 2007 with their self-released debut ‘Wizards of Ahhs EP’. The record took the scene by the storm, several tracks from that EP were featured on Pitchfork like “I’m Not Gonna Teach Your Boyfriend How to Dance With You” were in constant rotation in the late summer leading up to the EP’s release.
The record received a coveted “Best New Music” label receiving an 8.4 score. The Black Kids were on top of the world and on every 20-somethings iPod’s playlist. The Black Kids are made up of 5 different musicians, including two female keyboardists as well as your standard guitarists and drummer.
The two ladies, Dawn Watley and Ali Youngblood give what would be a standard 3 piece rock band live on stage a much welcomed boost. Both Watley and Youngblood are quite animated as they tap away on their keys and synths, often acting out songs with their hands or simply shouting out their vocal parts while dancing in sync with the beat and each other.
Vocalist and lead guitarist Reggie Youngblood (yes, they’re siblings) is equally as charming and energetic on stage. He knows how to captivate an audience while performing his guitar duties. The Black Kids have been quiet for a few years, but they’re still a notable act in terms of indie rock in the 2000s.
I had been waiting since the release of their last album in 2008 to see them live and was destroyed when they disappeared but thank god they're back. It was worth the wait. Their performance was amazing, non-stop energy and the nicest group ever. Crowd kept screaming "I miss you" (I'll admit it, I was guilty of screaming that too). You could tell how appreciative they were to have such a warm welcome and a crowd that was genuinely excited to see them again. They performed two new songs, "Clots" and "why'd you only call me when you're crying" One of the greatest shows I've been to this year. A must see
