Heffron Drive is made up of two of the most talented musicians that I've witnessed in my 21 years. Dustin Belt has incredible musical talent. He gets immersed in his guitar while still paying attention to the crowd. He makes it known that he is happy playing the music. Dustin doesn't care about the fame, he's out there to do what he loves. Kendall Schmidt has an incredible amount of vocal talent. He makes you feel like you're the only one in the crowd, even though you're with a couple hundred other people. The amount of eye contact both musicians make is one of the best parts. You feel like you're being pulled from the crowd onto a stage with two best friends from Kansas. Belt and Schmidt are easily having fun. They are easily enjoying what they do. And they are easily proving the record labels wrong.
Schmidt started his own record label, Tolbooth Records (TR), and each song is produced by TR. The album is completely different than Schmidt's previous endeavor, boy band Big Time Rush. BTR had a huge teenage following, which clearly brought most of the fans to the show, but some had been following Schmidt and Belt since their MySpace days. Although the songs are independently produced, there is absolutely no apparent way of knowing. Schmidt has intense vocal skills combined with Belt's musical talent, backed up by an extra keyboardist and a drummer. The lyrics are wholehearted and meaningful, Schmidt even claimed one was written for the fans. "Happy Mistakes," the title of the album is possibly one of the best albums of this year. I compare this album to Mylo Xyloto, AM, or even X&Y. An album that can be put on in a long car ride to make the time go by. An album that can make any day better. The album can easily be played from front to back with no problems. I have never felt so involved in a show before. Although Logan Square Auditorium is one of Chicago's smaller venues and it was a small show, Belt and Schmidt both made eye contact and made the crowd feel involved. It was not a normal "how are y'all doing tonight" show, it was a true, "I care about how you feel. How do you feel?" The music brought your heart, mind, soul, and ears all together, to forget about the outside world for just a few minutes. All of your anxieties leave, and be immersed in Heffron Drive. - Addie Whelan
