Music was a passion for Kina Grannis throughout her youth, playing piano and violin from an early age. However, it was picking up the guitar at age fifteen that Grannis fell in love, teaching herself the instrument throughout high school. Whilst studying at the University of Southern California, she was selected to record a six-song EP with the music department at the University's Thornton School of Music in 2005, finding inspiration in the likes of Jason Mraz and Vertical Horizon's music. Her next musical venture was two years later, when she recorded a song alongside Rachel Lawrence and Deborah Ellen, "Ours to Keep," which featured frequently on television series, General Hospital.
Through posting videos of her songs on YouTube, she won the Doritos Crash the Super Bowl contest with her song, "Message from Your Heart." Her online presence went on to become incredibly popular, reaching 99 million views .This win led to a contract with Interscope Records and started to work on recording an album. However, the contract was terminated in January 2009, deciding to pursue her music career as an independent artist.
Grannis self-released "Stairwells" in 2010, breaking into the Billboard 200 Chart at number 139, receiving significant airplay in the US, as well as being played on BBC Radio 2 in the UK. Grannis then embarked on an extensive tour, travelling across the US, Canada, Europe and Asia. Her next release came in 2014, with "Elements," reaching number two on the ITunes Singer-Songwriter Chart and the number one spot on the ITunes Canada chart.

Hits and awards are great. But let’s be real, you’re only as good as the amount of people you have coming back to your shows to get you to those chart-topping statuses and accolades.
And Kina Grannis has proved this time and time again. Sure, she might not be playing the largest of stadiums or selling millions of albums (then again, who does?). But with more than 950,000 subscribers on YouTube, 162,000 Twitter followers and over 400,000 likes on her Facebook page, she clearly has an audience.
While a singer-songwriter through and through, she got her start in the spotlight by posting YouTube videos covering some of Top 40’s big hits. After building this kind of fan base, she started including her own original music and soon dropped albums and had song placements in a number of TV series including ‘Pretty Little Liars,’ ‘Gossip Girl’ and ‘Switched at Birth.’
With her experience performing in front of a camera after all those YouTube videos, she’s been a natural onstage. Commanding the audience and always filling a venue with overwhelming cheers and applause, Kina proves that singer-songwriter and pop music can draw big crowds as much as any other genre. Her vocals and instrumental skills are also quite impeccable as she does all the arranging on her covers and has even done a few acapella, which is a feat in itself.
So next time you’re looking for an artist to pick you up after a bad mood, tune in to her YouTube channel or catch a show. You’ll have a smile on your face in minutes.
OMG, her concert was fantastic - everything I had hoped it would be! I got to meet her and Jesse at the meet-and-greet, and chat with each of them for a few minutes. The concert was simple, just an instrument, performer, and raw skill/talent (as opposed to some other artists where the performer has added a band which changes their entire style of music). First Jesse (Imaginary Future) opened with maybe six songs (I hadn't realized how good he is), then Kina followed with a set of her own (and they added a few duets in there, also). I will definitely see these two perform live again if I have the opportunity, and I highly recommend it to anyone who even slightly enjoys their music!
Full of love, sweetness, kindness, and such a purity to her voice. Her husband (Imaginary Future) was also great. It was really sweet and inspiring to see them perform together.
World Cafe live Downstairs is such a perfect venue. Intimate, great acoustics, sound for this type of performance.
I will certainly keep listening to Kina and come back to WCL again and again.
If you are a fan of Kina, you must see her live. It is very memorable. Her shows are such a great meditative and supportive place. Have you ever heard a sold out crowd dead silent? I swear I heard people shushing each other at times they were so fixated on the music. :)
That was an amazing live show! Kina and Jesse gave me a very lovely night! They are fantastic couple and musicians! Can’t wait for more music from these two lovely people!
It was an amazing show. It's wonderful to see the singer(s) in real life after watching so many of their songs online. So glad I had an opportunity to go :)
Great concert! It was my first KG show, and she didn't let the fans down. Her musical talents are even better in person than on her YouTube channel or CD.
