I went into this show having listened to "The Birds Outside Sang" for the last few months, so I was very excited to see Florist live. The show was intimate and relaxing, the soft keyboards and weird effects giving me chills about 5 times throughout the set. Having the show at such a small venue as DC9 was definitely a highlight, since everybody "on stage" were just a few inches away, on the slightly raised platform nestled into the corner of the room. An interesting part of Florist's performance was their lack of a drummer, only using a drum machine for the title track of their last album. Though it was a bit disappointing to not hear tracks like "I Was" or "White Light Doorway," the absence of precussion didn't take away from the vibe of the set at all.
After buying a shirt and patch from Emily, and having a conversation about how she made the album artwork, Mutual Benefit opened with a 10 minute, incredibly trance-like and calming track, which I wish I knew the name of. His set was as dreamy and enchanting as the opener, and I'm glad I stayed for a little bit to see him play.
It was a very fun night, and it was amazing talking to Emily; she was so nice and appreciative of me enjoying her music and merch.
