Born in California in 1987, Kesha Rose Sebert was raised by a single mother who was a successful singer-songwriter in her own right but struggled financially, torn between the demands of her craft and the need to support her family. When the family moved to Nashville, a young Kesha’s out-there persona did not sit well with the conservative surroundings however she used the time productively to work on her music and built her craft.
When she was just 17 she was persuaded to drop out of school and return to California to pursue music by songwriter and producer ‘Dr Luke’ who subsequently signed Kesha to his label and publishing company. Slowly, with Dr Luke's tutorage, Kesha began to write songs for artists and feature as a backing singer but still had to waitress on the side in order to live.
Her first breakthrough came when she sang backing on Flo Rida’s massive hit ‘Right Round’ but, determined to make it on her own terms, she declined featuring in the video or taking any credit for the performance. The appearance did however act as a catalyst for her signing a deal with RCA and finally being able to put the finishing touches to an album that she had already been working on for 6 years.
That album became ‘Animal’ which hit the top of the Billboard charts when it was released in January 2010 birthing the massive single ‘Tik Tok’. Having worked hard to get to that point, Ke$ha wasn’t going to stop there and the success continued with the release of her second album ‘Warrior. To begin with the dollar sign in Ke$ha’s name was an ironic nod to being broke but now everyone knows that it spells success.

Following in the footsteps of her elder brother, Natasha Bedingfield released her debut album “Unwritten” in 2006 with her R&B infused pop, going straight into the charts at number one. Running throughout the album are themes relating to female empowerment in tracks like “Single and “These Words”. Known for her gravelly, grainy and soulful vocals, its strength and beauty is laid down in the vulnerability of “I Bruise Easily” which eloquently showcases her incredible range. Her follow up self-titled album released in 2007 was less pop and more R&B while incorporating aspects of reggae featuring songs such as “I Wanna Have Your Babies” and “Soulmate” a definite departure from the themes explored in her debut album. This album allowed her the opportunity to support Justin Timberlake on his FutureSex/LoveShow tour which then saw her gain great success in North America.
With catchy songs advocating female empowerment, it’s no surprise that these tracks particularly “Single” act as an anthem for ladies everywhere evoking the biggest sing-a-long, with fists pumping in the air. As Bedingfield progressing through her repertoire, performing “A.N.G.E.L” and “Soulmate” acoustically softens the tone as her impeccable voice shines in all its glory. There’s plenty of movement in the crowd with the dancier songs like “All I Need” and “Neon Lights” with the emphatic drum beats resonating through the room. Natasha Bedingfield is a pure delight to watch as she owns the stage with presence and her incredible soulful vocals which melts your heart leaving your with the warm fuzzy feeling inside.
‘Wake up in the morning feeling like P Diddy’…. Whether you’re a fan or not, it is hard to deny that Ke$ha makes great pop songs. Catchy hooks and unforgettable lyrics in abundance, like or loathe the music she makes, her success speaks for itself and her first two albums achieved nine top 10 hits on the Billboard charts.
It is hard not to have fun at a Ke$ha show, if you do not mind getting covered in glitter that is. It rains glitter at Ke$ha gigs, quite literally. From the ceiling to the floor, everything is covered in the stuff- even Ke$ha’s ‘animals’ who make spontaneous appearances on the stage, throw buckets full of glitter into the audience.
I’ve seen Ke$ha live a number of times and watched her live show improve and evolve into the spectacle it is now. As she has achieved more success, the production effort put into her show has increased immensely, which means set changes, dazzling lighting displays, dancers and of course more glitter!
One of the best was at Brixton Academy. Hits like ‘Tik Tok”, “We R Who We R” and “Die Young” stirred the young audience in a glitter fuelled frenzy and the whole place buzzed with an energy that is rare to feel at live shows these days.
If fun, light-hearted pop music is your thing, you should definitely catch a Ke$ha show and even if it’s not, you’ll still find it pretty difficult not to enjoy yourself.
