In a special Two-Night-Series at the A-Trane, Roland Satterwhite, together with Tal Arditi and Ivars Arutyunyan present two distinct musical worlds, each highlighting a different facet of their long-standing collaboration, unified by Satterwhite’s singular voice as a composer, lyricist, and improviser. TOLYQYN is a three piece Berlin rock band (guitar, viola, drums) founded by Roland Satterwhite (Moka Efti Orchestra) and Tal Arditi, featuring Satterwhite’s invented plucked viola style and political texts. Recently they have been joined by Latvian drummer Ivars Arutyunyan The viola plays the role of the bass and compliments Arditi’s astonishing technical virtuosity. The song texts are inspired by writers such as Gil Scott-Heron and Paul Simon among others. Tolyqyn’s self-titled debut was released in 2020 to critical acclaim, garnering praise across German radio and press, web blogs and led to their national TV debut as well as a full length live set on DeutschlandFunk Kultur Radio. Since then, the band has toured extensively across festivals and stages in Germany, Switzerland, Netherlands and Denmark and beyond. The band is dedicated to the art of the song, but also at the same time, capable of extended jams. intimate and melodic vocal lines evolve into rhapsodic and expansive instrumental improvisations. The musicians are masters of their respective instruments. In 2023, they released their second album „Silver Seed“, and in 2025, recorded a third album, “Man Becoming Man”, due for release later this year with the Koeln-based HeyBlau Record Label.
