There can’t be many art mediums as versatile as the pop song. Perfect, unabashed pop songs can sound aggressive, tranquil, joyful, sorrowful, frantic, controlled… two of them can be as contrasting as they are able to be but they can be united by the strength of their melody, and give feelings of joy and wonder that might not be the same as each other, but definitely come from the same gene pool. I bring this up because Goldroom play the kind of pop songs that I personally hear when I think of the concept of pop songs. They’re lighter than air and yet utterly vital. Fresh as a daisy sprayed with Febreeze but carry with them an untenable sadness, the kind that pretty much all art is inspired by. While they might spring from the mind of bedroom producer Josh Legg, it’s when he brings them to life alongside Mereki Beach and Nick Sandler on vocals and drums respectively that they truly develop a life of their own. Their easy, relaxed chemistry elevates them to new heights, especially when they effortlessly segue from their own songs into their remixes of other artists like Niki and the Dove and Penguin Prison. For what it is, it’s pretty much flawless, the kind of live show that anyone can watch and come away with something they loved, whether they usually listen to this kind of music or not. That being said, pop in its purest form is pretty integral to the DNA of most music fans, so see this at the next opportunity you get, you will not regret it!
Within indie circles electro pop outfit Goldroom are one of the most talked about and highly recommended outfits of recent years. Josh Legg has been creating music under the pseudonym since 2010 and has worked alongside prolific artists including Niki + the Dove and College. He has also had a good amount of time to hone his abilities onstage and now he sees crowds as a great opportunity to try out new mixes and tracks as opposed to something nerve racking.
Taking influence from varying greats including Daft Punk, Bob Dylan, Nirvana and LCD Sounsystem the musician tries to incorporate various genres into his nu-disco sound and achieves this with startlingly successful effect. A debut album is still allegedly in the pipeline yet his acclaimed EPs, singles and remixes for some of the indie elite is more than enough to bring hundreds of revellers to the show. He plays a good mixture of previous material as well as teasing some new tracks that are likely to feature on his studio release. This is very much a first taster of Goldroom and with his confidence and appeal you feel as though it is only going to be the beginning of something sensational.
The concert was great and the lead musician had a light sense of humor in between songs and expressed his appreciation for Denver considering his main hub is in Los Angeles. I have to admit the lady vocalist was fantastic, and probably the big reason why it kept the audience engaged indeed. She needs to pair up with the lead performer every time!! I hope to see them at Aurora Fox theatre!
