Biografía
Born William Earl Collins, Bootsy was quick to take to the funk, forming a band with his older brother called ‘The Peacemakers’ in 1968. After his backing band at the time left over pay disputes, James Brown picked up the group as his new band and they were dubbed the J.Bs. In a short amount of time the band laid the grooves down for legendary tracks like ‘Sex Machine’ and ‘Superbad’, with Bootsy’s groovy basslines dominating the sound and helping to build his reputation as a funk machine.
Although Bootsy’s time with James was over, his time with the funk was just beginning as he went on to join George Clinton’s Parliament/Funkadelic. Collins helped to define the P-funk sound and helped the group take their music to intergalactic new heights. Years later, the band’s grooves are still being used as many were sampled and became the backbone for decades worth of classic Hip Hop songs.
Parallel to his time with Funkadelic, Bootsy also formed his own group, ‘Bootsy’s Rubber Band’ which had success on the RnB charts as well as seeing Bootsy transform into a number of increasingly bizarre alter egos including Bootzilla.
Since then Bootsy has become an almost mythical public figure, making appearances on tracks all over the place and with his trademark star glasses and Space Bass adorning everything from posters to tee shirts.
Críticas en vivo
Ageless funk and soul singer Bootsy Collins has seen some fantastic amounts of success in his forty years of singing. He has dominated the U.S. R&B Singles Charts since 1976, with his breakthrough single “I’d Rather be with You”, which made it to number 25. This evening he launches into the song “Body Slam!” which from the very first moment that the beat drops, the audience move all the way through their set throwing their best shapes for the 50 something singer, from Ohio. It is almost a time warp when Collins and band they go into the song “Jam Fan (Hot)”. His band are buzzing, and taking solos throughout the song. Collins shows of his four-octave range in the space of about 15 minutes using his voice as an instrument. It is as though her feels around every single note, in turn moving the audience who are screaming as he executes the vocal runs that he is so famous for. The atmosphere heightens when he hits the first verse for his number one single “Bootzilla”, every single person dancing like there is no tomorrow singing along to every word in the chorus, soaking up this psychedelic soul.
There are few musicians who embody the genre of funk as well as William Earl Collins. Better known internationally as Bootsy Collins, the man has had an incredibly interesting career working with the likes of James Brown and Parliament-Funkadelic. Now into his early 60s, he continues to tour around as a soloist yet still honours his past endeavours with great covers of 'Mothership Connection (Star Child)' by Parliament and 'Groove Is in the Heart' by Deee-Lite.
He also has his own incredibly funky discography to recreate to the delight of the audience. He is such a character and performs in a more animated manner than most of the musicians half his age. It is clear he is a born performer and absolutely adores being onstage more than anything else. Although he may be in his 60s, as he rushes into the crowd during 'Touch Somebody' it would seem that an early retirement is definitely not on his mind. This is fortunate for the audience who clearly enjoy watching him as much as he enjoys playing live.
Living in Cleveland Ohio at the time I had the pleasure of seeing the gang in rare form there are few bassist out there that can actually make that beautiful instrument talk and answer back he's gifted Larry Graham is another I speaking of the best of the best from my day there's Onion who use to be with Sam and Dave and later LTD you might not agree and that's your right but there's a sexual sweetness about that beautiful creatures of a instrument if you approach her right she'll make you do forbidden things to her and she'll give it right back to ya I'm just saying.
4Ever Funkatier
I have had the pleasure to see Bootsy 5 times with the Rubber band and a couple times with George and the boys. The best show was in San Jose when the Limbo Maniacs warmed up for them. That was long ago. The most recent time was at B.B. Kings in N.Y.C. There is no party like a Funk Party with Bootzilla. If you go, don't forget your FUNK card. We want you here in Connecticut! Check into the New Haven Green. It's always a good time and lot's of room to dance .
The September 14,2019 Sweetwater concert has been cancelled, I’ve confirmed with the concert venue and they no additional dates and are refunding tickets.
If he’s playing anywhere this year in the Midwest, can someone please share the information?
