Biografía
Originally formed by Keith Jeffery on lead vocals and guitar, Steven Jeffery on bass, and Michael Jeffery on drums, the moniker Atlas Genius came to Michael during a dream. In the footsteps of their father, who had been in a high school band himself, the siblings started to clear out their garage to build a practice room and recording studio. Around this time English-native Darren Sell joined the group on keyboard and Atlas Genius earned residency at a local pub playing cover songs to raise money for their studio.
Influenced by the brothers’ parents’ record collection including The Beatles and The Police, as well as Death Cab for Cutie, Beck, and Phoenix, Atlas Genius made their recording debut with the single “Trojans”. The 2011 single was written by all four members of the band and received significant hype from around the blogosphere, notably Neon Gold and Triple J’s Unearthed. After the song got picked up by Sirius XM and an acoustic version premiered on MTV2’s “120 Minutes”, the band were courted by labels and subsequently signed with Warner Bros. Records.
Prior to signing with Warner Bros., Steven Jeffery announced he was leaving the group, and Atlas Genius continued as a trio of Keith, Michael and Sell. In June 2012 the band released their debut three-track EP “Through the Glass”, which they supported with a North American tour toward the tail-end of 2012. A few months later in February 2013 Atlas Genius released their debut album “When It Was Now”, which reached No. 34 on the Billboard 200. Like the EP before it, “When It Was Now” was recorded in the band’s home studio and earned favourable reviews from across the musical press. The band subsequently released the single “If So” in February 2013 and embarked on a worldwide tour of the U.S., the UK and Australia beginning in April 2013.

Atlas Genius fell onto my radar when their album was first released on Spotify. I was intrigued by their debut album (When It Was Now) cover when it popped up on the advertisement banner, so I clicked on it. I know the saying "don't judge a book by its cover" could apply to album artwork as well, but I am notorious for automatically thinking that if an artist has an interesting cover for their album, then their music will be worth listening to once. And Atlas Genius proved to be more than worth my time, and so I eventually bought their album. They are so talented; I was so excited to see them live, and I had the privilege of doing so last year on the first day of Lollapalooza. Atlas Genius' sound is so fresh and they are a great band to see perform outside. There were so many people who came to watch them. As my friends and I inched closer to the stage, we saw many people up in the trees vibing to the music. We ended up next to this really cute couple who started dancing with us. My friends and I had made it just in time for my favorite song by Atlas Genius, "Electric," and it was amazing hearing it performed live. I love how different their sound is from the majority of the bands that come on the radio. The beats and lyrics are so on point, and they come together so nicely. It was such a fun and upbeat time full of dancing and great music.
Loud clapping permeated the air, but was easily pierced by the sharp, strong guitar chords of the intro to Atlas Genius', "If So". The crowd cheered louder as the popular melody began casting its urban, shimmery, glowing tone across the room.
The music was really mellow, and sounded like what you would imagine being the sound track to a perfect drive through a city in a nice car. It was a lot of fun to be surrounded by the dancing kids in neon clothes and thick rimmed glasses. They were all really nice, and the mood was very laid back and accepting.
It was just so much fun, and the night felt very movie like and memorable. I listened to a few more songs before I realized that I was hooked on Atlas Genius' music. They were a great soundtrack to the way that my life had been feeling at the time, and they showed up just in time.
Their live sound was always going to be something that stands with me. It was just so city like, pretty, crisp, safe, comforting and hip. It felt like I truly belonged for the first time, and I loved the vibes that the music and the audience gave off.
Australian Alt-Rockers Altas Genius are something of a phenomena in cult appeal as before their debut album dropped in 2013, they were selling out venues globally due to the critical acclaim and inherent buzz around their first releases and live ability.
Now consisting of the brother duo Keith Jeffery and Michael Jeffery, the band conducts their show in a fairly traditional manner under the influence of key inspirations The Beatles and Beck. They communicate with their crowd on a personable level as they understand it was their level of support that broke Atlas Genius from beneath the radar. They seem genuinely pleased by the cheers for fan favourite 'If So' as the opening bars are played and they repay the support with a high quality rendition. It is great to see earliest single 'Back Seat' included in the set and the dedicated fans give this a huge cheer. The whole room cheers for 'Trojan Horse' the first track the band recorded and a fitting end to a proficient live performance.
Great show, they had a solid opening acts including Skylar Gray and The Young Wild. Atlas Genius puts on an amazing show, they talked a bit with the audience, played all their hits plus two covers including The Weeknd's The Hills, and Drake's Hotline Bling.Overall the audience was really into it, everyone was dancing and having fun and just feeling it.
Also, I Patrick Carney of the Black Keys was in the audience. Overall the night was really fun and awesome.
First I have to give big props to the venue, 3rd and Lindsley. It is an excellent, intimate venue. Secondly, Atlas Genius was on point. True value show for the money paid. I was also impressed with the opening and middle acts: Secret Weapon (tons of energy) and Skylar Grey (phenomenal range and passion). I would visit this venue again and would pay money to see Atlas Genius anytime.
