It’s certainly not been unheard of for rappers to change their stage names down the years, but it’s rare to see a case - as is true of Yasiin Bey - that seems to be driven purely for artistic and conscientious reasons, rather than because a new moniker might represent a business opportunity or a rebranding exercise. The man who’s made his name both on film and TV screens and on record as Mos Def is now going by the name of Bey instead, but it all seems tied into his wider artistic vision; Bey’s lyricism has taken a marked turn for political territory, having recorded a version of Jay-Z and Kanye West’s ‘Paris’ that rails against the materialism of the original and even undergone Guantanamo-style force-feeding on camera. That might also explain, too, why the shows that he’s performed under the Bey moniker so far seem to have left behind the laid-back approach of his Def days, instead replacing it with a visceral anger and a genuine urgency in the way that he encourages the crowd to engage themselves with the issues that his songs address.
Yasiin Bey - believe me when I say this man can do no wrong! The moment he hits the stage there's a clear distinction that there is an artist in front of you! The words are not enough to describe the magnitude of talent and professionalism exhibited on the stage. His sense of music and timing is out of this world. Yasiin's beautiful, genuine smile lights up the place and you can't help but start smiling with him. It's his energy, his presence, his voice and his humbleness - undeniable and yet so rare in our times! Yasiin's music and message have always had a profound affect on me as an individual.
I am forever grateful and blessed to be, to witness, to feel alive under the halo of Yasiin Bey a.k.a. Mos Def <3
I saw Mos Def with Talib Kweli couple years ago and back then it was a great show just as fans would expect. However, in 2019 it seems Yasiin is on a different mission with HipHop only partially being reflected in his performance. Dancing like a dervish over oriental tunes or rappin his favorite songs over Chicago house beats is what you may expect these days. For me as a HipHop head it was quite a disappointment but Yasiin was pretty aware that his performance would not be for everyone (he was even joking about it on stage).
Perhaps it’s just me not being ready for it yet but please settle your expectations if you are solely looking for old school hip hop at its best..
I've been to a lot of concerts and this one was by far one of the worst ones ever. Have been looking forward to hearing Mos Def for ages, definitely a fan of his work.
Fist, comes 1,5h too late, but I mean not an issue, most are late on stage. He is so much on drugs that the guy does not know what's up or down! Forgets half of the words, screams randomly and just disappoints in each and every way. Only times when the crowd reacted even a little was when he played one of his hits, but even that he was too gone to perform normally. We left after 30min, and so did a lot of other people. Shame, was really up for hearing him rap and speak his thoughts.
Very disappointing performance. He was 45 minutes late on stage and spent half of his show dancing on stage to house music. The 2 songs he did which people actually liked were rapped on top of random beats which did not fit with the song, and for a lot of his set he simply spray painted a sign and threw roses into the crowd. Hugely disappointing show. Bought ticket based of advertising saying he'd be performing mos def and black star classics - no black star songs were performed and only 2 mos def classics, which were accompanied by bird noises and sporadic screaming into the microphone.
I got to witness Yasiin Bey in concert in October of 2019 his engery is unparalleled it provides a unique experience to say the least I was center stage and even got a rose he is a free spirit just like myself I can't really relate to his messages in his work he is my daily inspiration and inspired reactions to my life's journey I wish he would preform more in the states but believe me I know why? He doesn't he is my favorite ultimate human of the universe and cosmos.
Saw Yasin Bey in Atlanta at the Musicfest. He was great and inspriring. Enjoyed him greatly. He was a free spirit and you could tell that he loved being there as much as we loved having him there. Thought the roses were a bit excentric, kinda Coming to America, but it was something to see. The sound team definitely needed to get their stuff together, they cause his show to start late.
Mos seemed bored!! The impros were not that exciting!
Dont get me wrong I would be happy with it in a normal concert but not for the farrwell tour not for the f**king last concert homie!!! Could be better but still big up yasiin! Allah bless u dante
Ps: very nice sufi rituals videos were played during the show
Amazing show and sound set!!!! Yasiin and the BlackStar family are the shit! The DJ’s mixing and blendin rare grooves was the best. Yasiin had as much fun as we the fans did. Talib Kweli was fire on the ones and twos. Goaple was heavenly... I look forward to the next all night DANCE PARTY.
