You can feel the reverb dripping from the axe of Toy’s lead guitarist Dominic O’Dair when the quintet is in full flow in front of a crowd. This echoing, slightly hazy quality defines the group as a live act and sets them apart from others in their niche. When the group first started touring, the Horrors were vastly influential to them, they even went on tour with the band in 2011. You can certainly see the effect that group has had on Toy, as plenty of shoegaze elements came to the fore on their self-titled debut album back in 2012, which achieved critical acclaim. They have certainly taken that momentum into a live setting, and they look even more comfortable as their sound continues to progress with new track “As we turn”, which the band play to perfection; swirling the crowd into a frenzy as the song spirals to its cathartic conclusion. However, as displayed on 2013’s “Join The Dots”, Toy can do subdued. When they tap into some of their moodier material, tracks such as “To A Death Unknown” or the gentle melancholia of “Frozen Atmosphere”, lead singer Tom Dougall brings a perfect balance to the fuzzy energy underpinning a lot of the set. Toy’s real strength in concert is the equilibrium between calm and chaos that they create, keeping the audience wrapped up in the mood of it all whilst delivering all the gusto that they can possibly muster. When it comes to mixing melody with mood, atmosphere with adrenaline, you cannot go far wrong with Toy.
Toy premiered this new venue (MONO , Famouth, Cornwall, England) with a wonderful set of songs, lots of 'wigging out' on lengthy guitar shredding which is their forte . the eighty souls closely gathered together in this tiny room were left exhausted after their seventy-five minute set. Venue was atmospherically dimly lit with the band pretty much dressed in dark black made for an illuminating show. Set list was as follows (although they jigged it about in the middle) : Conductor; Too Far Gone; Left Myself Behind; Spirits don't Lie; It's Been So Long ; Koptor; Jungle Games; Fall out of Love; Won't Be The Same; Join The Dots; Heart Skips; Motoring; Dream Orchestrator. Highly recommended must also go to ISABELLES https://www.flickr.com/photos/johnharveypegg/16841683619/ a fabulous home grown band who blasted out a swift thirty minute set of self composed psychedelic maelstrom songs . All for £8.50 , a bargain. What a night, my brain have just about recovered
The Brixton Electric lived up to it's old name of the Fridge last night as the temperatures inside were only slightly warmer than outside until TOY came on. The Richard Fearless "DJ" set providing some excellent instrumental music before and after the brief support act by JC Flowers. JC Flowers played some pyshedelia inspired songs but never really got going. They walked off after half an hour without saying goodbye - how strange!
TOY, despite some technical problems were excellent. They played a few tracks from their latest album but for me the highlights were the longer ones from their first two albums, particularly Motoring and Kopter. Lighting was good except that Charlie on drums was barely visible. He is the most high energy drummer that I have seen over the years.
TOY always play a high energy set and the crowd last night were not disappointed, although I was disappointed that there weren't more people there to enjoy them.
Great gig. Toy were what I had hoped for having seen them a long time ago in Rough Trade east when promoting their first album. They had a presence, energy and great tunes!
The fact that the concert was aimed at hearing impaired made the event extra interesting and I wonder if subtitles could be made a part of more gigs. I certainly had no idea Toy's lyrics were so full of discrete words.
My only quibble was that I wish bands smiled a bit more. It would be nice if they looked as though they were enjoying the experience as much as I did here.
Last night I went to see and can honestly say they are one of the best rock bands out there.
Three albums in and their sound is evolving all the time making for an incredible live experience.
Every song was played to absolute perfection and at the end of the evening the crowd was left begging for more. This is the 3rd time I have seen Toy live & their shows just get better & better.
Musical geniuses the 5 of them.
Great performance and loud as hell! That's what I call a Supersonic freakout! It's a shame that not that many people showed up, I was expecting a full house. Next time will be much better...
It was a lovely gig in a great venue, me and my friends really enjoy the show. And I love to see them again in the future gig. Thank you Toy, Thank you Songkick. :)
