Mando Diao almost immediately gained the attention of journalists, being described by a journalist as the best-unsigned band that he had ever seen. They soon after earned themselves a record deal with EMI Sweden.
Their debut full-length studio album “Bring Em In” released in October 2002, made it to number 5 in their native Sweden’s Album charts and was later certified Gold.
Their following was growing gradually with the release of their album “Hurricane Bar”, released on September 22nd 2004, charting in four countries, and being certified Gold in Germany and Austria. “Ode to Ochrasy” the band’s third album made it to the top ten of four countries, again being certified Gold in two of them. The album was led by the release of the single “Long Before Rock ‘n’ Roll” making it to number 16 in Sweden’s Single chart.
Around the time of the release of their fifth studio album, the band had earned a headline slot at the Live Earth festival in Hamburg, which followed the release of “Give Me Fire!” on February 13th 2009. The album made the top spot of the albums charts in three countries, and was Mando Diao’s first Platinum record. The album featured the hit single “Dance With Somebody” which made the top 10 of six different countries. “Infruset” released on October 31st 2012, made it to number 1, and went 4x Platinum in their native, Sweden.
Mando Diao don’t sound especially Swedish - in fact, they sound as if they’re from somewhere considerably more exotic, climate-wise - but I guess that’s a testament to the power of dreams; the name of the band comes from an apparently nonsensical phrase that somebody shouted at guitarist and vocalist Bjorn Dixgard in a dream. Since forming in 1999, they’ve released seven records and built up a significant international fanbase; in particular, they’ve met with real success in Austria, Germany, Japan and their homeland, too. They remain a popular fixture on the European festival circuit, too, and have made appearances at Coachella in the U.S. and even filmed an MTV Unplugged special, with a slew of special guest stars.
Once such European festival appearance came earlier this summer, when they played to an enormous crowd in Germany at Rock am Ring; playing a career-spanning set that focused on the more electronic sound of their most recent album, the band leant towards the more dramatic, epic side of their sound, and were rewarded with a feverish reception from the audience - huge singalongs characterised the set, proving that, despite recent changes in sonic approach, Mando Diao remain a huge band in their home continent.
