The man you see in the picture above is pretty much singlehandedly responsible for Drum and Bass being the genre we know it to be today. Whether you’re into the music or not that kind of innovation should be respected, but like any innovator worth their salt, Carl Craig didn’t just stop there and rest on his laurels. Hailing from Detroit it was his 1992 single Bug in the Bassbin that paved the way for Drum and bass as we know it but since then he’s been branching out, taking his Techno bedrock and adding samples and influences from Jazz and Soul to give his sound an earthier, more natural feel. The best way of seeing this is in his live shows, where he seems to perform from a decently sized home studio and improvises over synth hooks, pitched up samples from world music, drums breaks half inched from Funk and general electronic weirdness. Needless to say it’s a pretty incredible sight, flying in the face of those who claim that DJ’s can produce nothing but vacuous EDM or other people’s songs. This is Techno as art. The same way Radiohead is Rock as art or MF Doom is Rap as art, and it’s as much a treat for the head as it is for the heart and the dancing shoes. Highly recommended.
Moodymann induces quite a ruckus as he walks on stage this evening. The audience is extremely excited for this highly anticipated set.
The whole performance that they do is so strange. It is almost like an art installation, with the way that that they have such a funk soul and disco sound in their performance with the DJs behind him not only triggering beats and basslines, they’re also playing the keyboard and the guitar in such a funk style. Whatever it is, it is making this audience dance and adding to this almost unsettling sort of atmosphere. Moodymann walks aimlessly around the stage with his signature long hair just flowing about, when he walks up to the mic and simply just says a few words here and there with his drawling American accent. So interesting to watch, if a little bit strange. Some of the best-received songs are “Don’t You Want My Love” and “Desire” which is similar sort of vibes, which create similar reactions amongst this audience. It’s an experience.
One of the finest DJ's I've had the pleasure of being in the presence of!
Juan Atkins, the Detroit born DJ and founder of record label Metroplex was mesmerising! how can so much talent be in those two hands? music is life and let me tell you something ladies and gentleman, life is beautiful!
People believe him to be one of the creators of techno music and some in fact believe that he is the creator and after hearing him it's not hard to see why!
Playing an array of his finest songs from 'Urban Tropics' to 'I Love You', infused with other popular dance tracks. The pulsing synths and deep bass kept the place moving all night, kept the energy flowing, kept the vibes good and most importantly kept the crowd pleased, there was not a single thing that could have gone wrong for Juan!
His hands wouldn't stop moving, each touch and twist of the musical devices were his way of fine tuning every inch of the records playing, that much care and attention going into a set only proves how amazing and talented Juan allows himself to be. His relaxed personality shines through and is portrayed in his outfit which consists of a hoody and jeans, making him that much more relatable.
Juan Atkins is an amazing DJ and going to his concert is anything and everything far from the word disappointment!
