Formed in 1996, led by frontman Willy Rodriguez, the band has featured a whole host of other musicians, utilising exotic percussion as well as a three-piece horn section. Having been formed in Puerto Rico, the band's popularity has spread throughout the Caribbean and has also infiltrated the airwaves of southern and central America. The band's name, Cultura Profética, refers to the fact that music is a "voice of culture," with reggae being "prophetic" due to social commentary that has timeless value, reflecting contemporary issues as well as those of the past.
The band recorded their first record in 1998, with legendary producer Eroll Brown behind the mixing desk, known for having produced albums with Bob Marley. They recorded the album, titled "Canción de Alerta," at his studio in Kingston, Jamaica. They returned to Eroll's studio for their second release, 2000's "Ideas Neuvas." Their second album showed progression in the band's music, through their fusion of reggae with latino musical styles, utilising latin rock, boss nova, salsa and ska to create their new sound. In support of this album, they played at Tito Puente's amphitheatre in May 2000, with the performance later being released as a DVD titled "Cultura en Vivo."
In 2004, Cultura Profética tried to expand their fan base and break into the international stage, moving to Mexico temporarily in he hope to grow their audience. After touring throughout Mexico, they then released their fourth studio album, M.O.T.A in 2005. The album again used the talents of Eroll Brown for the album's engineering.
The band released another live DVD, covering their performance at the Jose Miguel Agrelot Coliseum in 2008, hang played at a series of concerts in their home country, titled "San Juan Nights," an event run by the local radio station. Their fifth album, "La Dulzura" went on to be released in 2010,
Cultura Profética was amazing last night! They are all extremely talented and kept me on my feet for the entire concert. The horn section was top notch, their intonation was incredible. The entire band gave an amazing performance, even after touring and being tired from past performances. They are the definition of true talent, and musicianship.
