It’s fair to say that a lot of people know this American R&B/Funk band Cameo for their smash hit single, which topped the charts internationally, “Word Up”. This performance tonight says a lot more about their career, which spans thirty years. Cameo released their first album, “Cardiac Arrest” in 1977, which went straight up to 16 in the US R&B chart. Altogether, their career has seen sixteen studio albums released, with thirty-something singles too. Almost every single has been in the R&B charts.
This evening they start with the up-tempo, “Attack Me With Your Love”, opening with a four to the floor disco beat, getting the crowd into the grove. It’s not long before they are playing their hit single “Shake Your Pants” creating a euphoric party atmosphere in this club tonight. When they start teasing the audience with snippets of the song “Word Up!” there is electricity amongst the crowd. They know exactly what is coming to them. The crowd is bouncing off the walls when they start to play. One of the interesting things about this outfit, is that I feel as though I have heard most of these songs before, and it is clear looking them up later that a lot of their songs have been sampled in artist songs such as “Candy” which was featured in Mariah Carey’s “LoverBoy” and “Single Life” which was sampled by rappers Snoop Dogg and Bad Azz’s “Wrong Idea”.
Cameo delivered as only they can. They took us back and did songs that were almost forgotten. Glad they dug in the archives. Sounded great too! Can't wait for the next event!
