Abandoned by his mother at merely eight months of age, Bradley was raised in Gainesville, Florida by his maternal grandmother, before his mother returned eight years later and took him to Brooklyn, New York. Bradley subsequently spent a lot of time on the streets, sleeping in subway cars, however took inspiration from a James Brown performance his sister invited him to in 1962, and instantly wished to become a singer.
The road to success turned out to a long and winding one, Bradley soon joined the federal work program Job Corps, which moved him to Maine and taught the Floridian how to cook. Bradley spent the next 30 years working as a chef in New York, Alaska, and California and performing music on the side, playing where ever he was welcome. After being let-off from his job in California, Bradley moved back to Brooklyn, and performed in such clubs as the Black Velvet, where he earned a loyal following, and eventually caught the attention of Gabriel Roth of Daptone Records.
Bradley’s debut single on Daptone Records “Take It as It Comes” highlighted the singer’s talents and helped form a partnership with Thomas Brenneck. The pair released two singles as Charles Bradley & the Bullets before disbanding, however the two continued to work together with the Menahan Street Band, releasing the singles “The World (Is Going Up in Flames)” and “Heartaches and Pain”.
Bradley made his solo recording debut in 2011 with “No Time for Dreaming” a whopping 49 years after deciding he wanted to become a singer. The album earned a great deal of critical acclaim and Bradley embarked on a relentless tour in support of it. The singer followed the album up in 2013 with the album “Victim of Love” and has frequently been sampled by artists including Jay-Z and Asher Roth.

Wednesday 30th March. The Forum. Charles Bradley. Bradley, largely ignored in his home country of America he has found a good audience this side of the pond. It’s me the missus and Birds Eye Andy tonight for an evening of soul
It’s a sold out show at the Forum and we edge our way forward for a good spot. It’s the typical soul review style show tonight with the band coming on stage to set the scene, play a song and then introduce the main man himself.
Bradley takes the stage resplendent in white suit and we’re off on a short set of soul classics drawn for his two most recent albums and the new album released the day after the show.
Referring to his troubled past Bradley is genuinely moved to be there and the young crowd greet him enthusiastically which continues throughout the evening.
A quick costume change and he’s back on stage for part two of the show and Bradly impresses with his great voice and his trademark scream. Set ender is the moving tribute to his deceased mother a cover of Sabbath’s ‘Changes’.
A short but sweet set from a great soul singer finding his voice and audience in his later years backed by an impressive band.
It is crazy to think people have searched centuries for a fountain of youth when all the time it was on the tour bus of funk and soul musician Charles Bradley. I mean that is the only way I can begin to understand how a 65 year old takes to stage night after night and truly performs in every sense of the world. Although he has toured at a tiring pace for many years, he still seems enthusiastic to continue and never shows sign of fatigue whilst playing to the crowd. He really wants to make every performance his best yet and that is a very admirable quality and one that is quite rare quality in modern performers.
When you watch him up onstage recreating the funky stylings of 'Heartaches and Pain' it is clear that Charles has an unmatched passion for what he does. As the warm brass intermingles with his raspy, soulful vocal he could not look more at home or elated to be playing. He has such natural showman abilities so getting the audience behind him is no problem at all. After coming to the world of music at a later age, it would seem he is making up for time lost in all the right ways with impassioned and exciting performances night after night.
Charles Bradley is sixty-five years old. Now, this may not seem relevant in a concert review, but anyone who sees him in concert would probably be shocked to learn that he's at retirement age. He puts on a more energetic show than most groups half his age and is showing no signs of slowing down anytime soon. He leaves his heart and soul out there on the stage and can never be accused of just phoning it in.
Go see Charles Bradley even if his type of music generally isn't your thing. You will undoubtedly come away impressed with his performance. It's rare to see someone at his age making new fans like this, but a lifetime of hard work has finally paid off for Charles Bradley as he seems to be gaining more and more fans by the year. It's a little surprising who his fanbase consists of, too. It's not just baby boomers. Many young people are really getting into him as well and he's performed at many of the trendy music festivals that twenty-somethings love to attend. It should really show you how great of a performer Charles Bradley is if he can impress those who are usually really hard for a baby boomer to impress.
Not even sure what to say about this show. Charles seems to be more interested in trying to dance like Michael Jackson and take layers of clothes off than actually making music. And watching him lick his finger and trace it down to his crotch was priceless. Could barely understand a word out of his mouth and I was 6 rows back. It was certainly a show but not music.
oh soul brother! what a show. He moves the crowd like crazy! A very charismatic performance and his backing band is fucking mint too! Do not pay much attention to what reviews his albums get, just go watch him live and you'll know for yourself. <3
Unfortunately Charles Bradley was unable to make the show which was very disappointing because this was the primary reason for purchasing the tickets. Sorry to not be able to give better feedback.
Thanks,
Sean
Great greater greatest! If you close the eyes you feel the spirit of James Brown flying around the room, jamin' with MR. Brown. I was a passionate listner to his music but became a fan! :)
Absolutely fabulous. He is a marvel. The emotion, energy, and excitement of his music is a wonder. A great showman with great songs backed by a truly powerful band that just won't quit.
