Moriarty are a quirky French-American band who have been together for eighteen years, which has to be some kind of milestone right? They make a very distinct sound with this first song of their set, sounding as though it has traditional French influences in the music, or even Yiddish, with the first song featuring a Jew harp, the singer, Rosemary Standley is playing the spoons on her upper thigh! This is truly an atmosphere that I have never experienced before. Moriarty are up of their stools dancing and in turn getting this audience up on their feet to engaging in a huge dance together. I’ve got to hand it to them, there is just something different about the music that works and I can see why this audience would pay the money to go and see them. It truly is a spectacle to watch them perform live. They perform one of their songs that charted in the French chart called “Belle” and it brings the house down with people singing along.
Of course I new "Jimmy", and saw Moriarty in 2013 in the Lido, but I was totally unprepared for yesterday's event.
I only found out about it the day before yesterday. Set in the Volksbühne, a theater with a long tradition and great acoustics, they mainly performed songs from their new album "Epitahp".
And boy, did they evolve. OK, I liked them before, but they where a little all over the place. Americana, Chansong, Klezmer, Circus, you name it, it was all there.
Somehow they managed to mold this into a plausible, unique mix. There was me expecting a few good songs along with a number of ones that would not do much for me. Instead each and every song knocked me off my seat.
And the sound! I have to go to concerts in theatres more often. The last number was without mikes, and you could hear every note. Wonderful evening
Concert fabuleux !
Le groupe dégage une très belle energy, la voix incroyable de Rosemary nous téléporte dans un autre temps.... Je recommande chaudement !

A beautiful intimate show! I wish Moriarty had spoken a bit more to the audience! They managed to transport us to their world!
The staff at Hackney was very friendly, bouncers and bar staff which is not very common in London!
