Germany has always been known to have a flourishing heavy metal scene and right at the forefront of this is Gamma Ray. Headed up by Kai Hansen of Halloween fame, the group has a large following across Europe for their doomed and extreme sounds. The stage is suitably dramatic with a large printed background that is illuminated in hazy purple as the audience start to stamp their feet after being kept waiting for twenty minutes past the original time. It would seem Kai wanted to create some anticipation as the band burst onto stage with a piercing guitar note.
From there on the show keeps a storming pace as the band rush through a number of their punchy tracks from across their eleven albums. Some merge into one and other and others have been given extended instrumentals to further encourage the crowd to mosh and thrash along with each other. The atmosphere may be chaotic at times but this seems to be where the group perform best of all. For example it is not until they have everybody clapping at the same rate as the drum beat before they begin a destructive rendition of 'Somewhere Out in Space' to close the evening.
One of the best concerts I've been to.
First of all, as it is a 25th anniversary tour the set list contained only the hits, where the entire crowed could sing-a-long.
Second awesome thing was, that on the contrary to some other metel bands, which started in 80s Gamma Ray seems not to be getting tiered of the stage, so the fill up entire venue with energy and it is visible that they have fun on stage.
The sound was also awesome. Not to loud, vocals where clear and none of the instruments was "overpowering" others. It was a perfect fit.
And as an Icing on the Cake Ralf Sheepers (the first singer of Gamma Ray and current front man of another Power Metal Band - Primal Fear, who left the band in 1994) showed up on the stage and sang a total of three songs with the band.
To finalize - Perfect Concert Experience form a Power Metal locomotive called Gamma Ray.
It was OK.
Some songs are missing for a best of show.
A Little short show.
Drum and Bas solo not to fun.
Kais guitar was a Little low(not tuning, volume).
Not one of their best performances.
Would be nice to just see like 20 songs, without messing around with a lot of new arrangements in the middle, like Somewhere out in space. Why dont just play the awesome song as it is?
Look forward to meet again though. I love the band!
