‘And love, such a silly game we play, Oh, like a summer’s day in May, What is love, what is love? I just wanted to be loved, oh oh’… these are my favourite lyrics of Matt Whites, so when he opened his show with the song I knew I was in for a great night! Rather than picking one album and sticking to it, he played a selection of songs from all five of his studio long plays, which proved to be an exciting and varied concert.
It was great to hear how his style has altered, even if only slightly, since Bleecker Street Stories, through to Love Songs, and jumping between all of the albums was exciting and a new way to listen to and appreciate the music. Also, I had no idea how much of a talented multi-instrumentalist he is. When White played Anyone Else from Best Days, he sat at the piano and gave the audience a taste of his talent by playing an extended version of the track, which was awesome to hear as it’s not on the album.
The venue had fantastic acoustics, and hearing White sing and play live in a great venue, sounded even better than his vocals on the recordings, something rare for musicians today. He is a man of true talent, who will continue to go far. No doubt ticket prices will climb, so make sure you get one soon!
