The band initially started after meeting online, when Ryan Merchant (vocals, keyboard, guitar) and Sebu Simonian (vocals, keyboards), who at the time were both working as jingle writers, met on craigslist. Following this, they formed the electro duo, Capital Cities, with the duo joined by bassist Manny Quintero, trumpeter Spencer Ludwig, guitarist Nick Merwin and drummer Channing Holmes to form the complete band.
In 2011, they independently released an EP, titled "Capital Cities," featuring the song "Safe and Sound" which went on to be a big hit and their first top ten single, after spreading quickly across the internet, with listeners being drawn in by their melding of upbeat synths and catchy pop melodies. The single went on to be certified multi-Platinum in the US, Canada, Germany and Mexico, as well as shooting to the top of the charts in a number of countries worldwide.
This success led to Capital Cities signing with Capitol Records, who then released their debut album "In a Tidal Wave of Mystery" in 2013, featuring appearances from OutKast's André 3000, helping to garner further interest from music fans. Their music has appeared on several commercials, again spreading their sounds to new listeners.
The band have had great success with their music videos, garnering several awards nominations for their creative visualisations of their singles "Safe and Sound" and their second single "Kangaroo Court." The former won an MTV award for Best Art Direction and Best Visual Effects. "Kangaroo Court" (2013) was nominated for a Grammy Award for Best Music Video.

If I had to choose one show that completely changed my opinion about an artist after seeing them live, I would definitely pick the time I saw Capital Cities. They opened for Fitz and the Tantrums, and played like they were the main act. After their performance, my friends and I were drenched in sweat, out of breath, and completely blown away by what we just experienced. Don't get me wrong, I didn't dislike Capital Cities before seeing them, I just wasn't that impressed with their music whenever they came up on my Pandora, at least enough to pay to see them in concert. So I was a little surprised when I saw multiple people in the crowd sporting their signature giant sunglasses, thinking that it was interesting to see so many people supporting an opening act. But now I know why, and I'm a Capital Cities convert. The band came out looking so stylish, sporting matching bomber jackets that had "Capital Cities" on the back. From the start of the first notes they played to the end of their show, I was hooked. The lighting was so cool, and it changed colors throughout, giving the concert this really cool vibe that made you want to dance nonstop. I still can't get over how much better they sound live - like ten times better. Even though my friends and I didn't know most of the songs, we still got down and had a great time. The person who impressed me the most was the trumpet player, Spencer Ludwig. He was so cute up there and knew how to get the crowd hyped up. He even played a fuchsia trombone for one song. He would dance around, showing off his cheetah print socks, winning over many people's hearts, including mine. Spencer crowd surfed while playing the trumpet, and I was so close to touching his hair but he was swept away before I could reach him. The other band members were amazing too, and they grabbed the audience's attention throughout their whole performance. Capital Cities also played a cover of "Staying Alive" which was amazing. There wasn't one person standing still. Everyone was vibing to the music and having a great time. My favorite part of their show was definitely at the end, when they played "Safe and Sound." It sounded even better live compared to the audio recording. During the chorus, closer to the end of the song, they had us take off our jackets and crouch down. When the chorus came, everyone jumped up, waving our jackets over our heads. The band jumped along with us too, and they extended the song so we could keep jumping. It was such a crazy experience getting jostled around by so many people. It literally felt like we were going to bring the roof down. Thinking back to that moment makes me so happy. When Capital Cities had to eventually stop playing, to our disappointment, Spencer threw out his towel and I caught it! The crowd erupted in applause and breathless cheers as they walked off the stage. As my friends and I slowly recovered from what just happened, we were all wondering how we were going to be this turnt up for the main show. I wholeheartedly recommend seeing Capital Cities live to anyone who is thinking about possibly seeing them. Go purchase that ticket ASAP - they are so worth it.
I didn't know many songs by Capital Cities when I first saw them, but their infectious tune made me want to dance to anything! Their energies were fantastic, and they managed to get the crowd to move in sync. I fell in love with their music. At first I only knew "Safe and Sound" due to it's popularity on the radio. Right after their concert, I listened to all their songs nonstop! Hearing the band live brought out their talents and magnified the quality playing on their instruments. Each song is well crafted and meaningful unlike many songs you hear in the industry nowadays. The trumpet they use for some of their songs shows how unique they really are. The show I saw them at was Music Midtown 2013 and it was pouring! The band paid no heed to the weather and managed to make the crowd forget about being soaking wet. They did a cover of "Holiday" that caused everyone to sing along, but I think their best song live was "I Sold My Bed But Not My Stereo." I didn't need to know the song to sing along (or at least try to). That song remained on my mind for weeks afterward. It was a majestic experience that I'll never forget. Capital Cities is a band you absolutely must see live!
fue super chevere... me encanto, el sonido se escucho espectacular, son demasiado buenos, todas laascanciones geniales, lo unico que me molesto fue el inicio del concierto de ellos, despues de los teloneros, se demoraron mucho.
Awesome concert! Very energetic and fun, they did make us all jump! The guy on the trumpet did an awesome job, very skillful and enthusiastic, definitely a highlight! Highly recommended, though it could have lasted longer.
The concert was absolutely amazing! The setlist was awesome and the crowd was jumping and singing through the whole thing. They have amazing connection with the audience. It’s a must go concert!
