This afternoon show was the icing on a Sunday's cake. Joan Shelley, accompanied by Nathan Salsburg and every so often Glen Dentinger, played her sweet songs in a spaceship-like venue. This venue made her feel at home, or at the studio where 'Over and Even' was recorded, we were told. She wanted to stay. But my guess is she went to Germany to play her next gig. Go see this lady if you can, and you'll be enchanted by down to earth lyrics wrapped in multi-dimensional rainbow colored melodies. "What?" Go see the show!
FIVE STARS. Or ten, or whatever the max number of stars is. Joan Shelley is an amazing talent, and her band also did not disappoint. I was particularly excited that Nathan Salsburg was present for his guitar and vocal work. I had the pleasure of speaking with Joan after the show--turns out she's also a delightful human being. This was really one of the best shows that I've seen in a long time, and the Berkley sound crew did a fantastic job of making them sound crystal clear and balanced.
What a magical show. I recommend that you find a small venue and get close to the stage to enjoy Joan's gentle songs, crystal clear voice, and the skilled accompaniment of guitarist Nathan Salsburg. Also, Joan's openers, the Kentucky-based two-piece The Other Years, featured stunning harmonies accompanied by banjo and fiddle. Perfectly set the tone of the evening.
She wasn’t headlining so it was a small set list, but her compositions are dreamy and her voice is angelic. She’s exactly how you’d expect live and better! I would whole heartedly recommend her love to anyone who just wants to get lost in a beautiful voice and amazing guitar playing from her coperformer Nathan!
