Clint Mansell, back in the day the former lead singer of band Pop Will Eat Itself and Nine Inch Nails collaborator, has since managed to chisel his name into the canon of great film composers. First cutting his teeth with film scoring for Darren Aronofsky's debut feature film Pi, he went on to score and feature in most of Aronosfky's later projects, including the explosive score to his 2000 film Requiem for a dream. 'Lux Aeterna' has since gone on to score countless film scores – a modified version was crafted solely for the Lord of the Rings' second feature, The Two Towers - and if a census was conduced would probably be Youtube's most heavily featured backing track. In concert, Mansell takes you through his extensive scoring catalogue and his live shows make for a divine fusion of classical night at the proms, and a more experimental alt-rock gig. He keeps his performances low key, preferring to let his compositions and accompanying musicians do the talking, as he often brings along The Kronos Quartet, the string foursome that delivered the 'Lux Aeterna' composition. With little over the top showmanship the real energy comes from the almost geeked out enthusiasm coming from Mansell and his band members as they bounce off one another's mutual love of the music.
What do you think.....
Thrilled to hear the addition of High Rise included in the live show, alongside the brilliant expected score classics. Visuals are always an excellent accompaniment to a show with little action onstage and were pleasing, if a little inconsistent. As a brand, Mansell has the potential to become more current and speak to a much wider audience, not just his family and friends. His message of spirituality, hope and love, is incredibly needed in our world. With his passion and talent, I hope he takes a stronger direction and plays it a little less safe, his 'uneasiness' has softened.
Will be exciting to see how he goes forward with his shows, now the retrospective is complete. A successful first tour of his score history!.... if a little middle of the road, suitable for the older generation. A fine tuned, flowing show will be required to keep his paying fans happy, less stories, go to the toilet before the show and don't leave it for another 11 years!
