They’re perhaps now widely considered to be the group that launched the solo career of a certain singer of theirs, by the name of Bjork, but The Sugarcubes had plenty to offer in their own right, too; all three of the albums that they released during the course of their six-year career - Life’s Too Good, Here Today, Tomorrow Next Week! and Stick Around for Joy charted inside the top twenty on the UK charts, and they were a popular live act across Europe for pretty much the entirety of their existence. Granted, certain aspects of their sound haven’t aged particularly well as the years have rolled by, but that’s besides the point; their live shows were instrumental in establishing Bjork as a live performer. Given the eccentric twists and turns that her career as an on stage performer have taken since, it’s probably fair to say that Bjork’s role as lead singer of The Sugarcubes saw her taking on an altogether more conventional job, but it’s clear to see from the manner in which she’d perform vocal acrobatics and from the confidence she exuded in terms of her stage presence that those early Sugarcubes were vital in kick-starting the live career of one of pop’s most fascinating icons.
