With over thirty years of band history, thrash metal German trio known as Sodom have not only successfully pioneered and carved out a niche in their territory but have extended their fan base across Europe and Asia. The origin in the band lies within lead vocalist and now the only original member Tom Angelripper. Whilst working in the mines, Angelripper was also learning to play bass and seeking a way out of the job and his small town he formed the band. Inspired by bands such as Motorhead, Venom and AC/DC the band largely situated in the black metal scene released their debut EP ‘In the Sign of Evil’ in 1984. Struggling to be taken seriously, the band made the conscious decision to transition into thrash metal taking on a new lyrical approach and progressing from common black metal themes and instead incorporating a more social and political commentary on relevant issues such as war. Releasing their third album ‘Agent Orange’ in 1989 was just the start of Sodom’s imminent rise to success as the album received critical acclaim worldwide and sold over 100,000 copies in Germany alone.
As a band who have helped to mould the thrash metal scene in Germany, you can imagine how highly revered they are. Passionate and dedicated fans fill the room leaving no room to breathe, chanting the band’s name over and over again before there are any signs of them on stage. As soon as they do appear, thunderous roars resonate through the room as the crowd go wild, throwing their bodies back and forth. Getting straight to business, Sodom launch into the set with their usual high energy intricate and fast-paced rhythms tied together through Angelrippers gravelly growls. Despite their age, Sodom still know how to bring the party, rocker out harder than ever. With a barrage of crowd-surfers from the offset, expect complete and utter chaos.
