UMEK is personally responsible for kickstarting the electronic music scene in his home country by first organizing illegal raves and then becoming one of Slovenia’s most wanted export products and number one music ambassador to the whole world.
And he surely does fly! Around 100 times per year, visiting almost every continent each year. His gig diary ranges from dark underground clubs in Berlin to massive techno stages on the world’s most renowned festivals. Apart from making his name in the DJ booth, he’s also a tireless producer. He mostly releases on his own imprint 1605, and most of his tracks end up on the very top of Beatport’s charts. After more than 25 years of being a professional musician, he decided to put his experience and skills into good use in the entrepreneurial world. Together with his management team, he founded a music-tech startup Viberate (www.viberate.com), where they are building the world’s greatest music platform that joins everything “live music” in one place. By mapping and globally connecting the entire live music community, Viberate is unique in introducing transparency to the live music market. As the first and only comprehensive live music platform, they’re truly creating new industry standards.

In Slovenia, Umek is known as one of the pioneers of electronic dance music, and his techno Djing took everyone by storm. I can find DJing slightly monotonous to watch live, although I enjoy the music, but watching Umek is something else entirely. He plays music from four turntables at once, where other artists can only manage two at a time.
He opened with a sampled radio voice playing over a heavy bass beat to introduce the show, and with the low house lights and epic strobes, it was the perfect start to the show. Many DJs are so intent on their desks that they don’t have a chance to interact with their audience, and surprisingly, even though Umek performs much more complex work that the majority of EDM musicians out there, he still found time and opportunity to shout out to us in the audience to dance, and he would put his hands up when he thought it was appropriate for us to clap.
His energy was incredibly high as he played through selections of original tracks, remixes, and covers of other artists, and he didn’t drop in focus once over the 2 hours. He played through several of his EPs, including Gatex, Polyvinyl, and Circles of Hell, before ending with his most recent 2014 releases. I don’t think I stopped dancing for a solid 2 hours, and it was an incredible vibe. His talent is another level, and I agree after seeing his performance with the consensus that his is one of the Top 10 Techno DJs in the world.
