Belleruche are one of those hugely talented, wildly likeable bands who just never seemed to get the recognition they deserved. The London based trio make a wonderfully soulful brand of trip hop - DJ Modest’s restrained electronics are kept in the background while Kathrin deBoer’s sublime, oldschool vocals lead, backed up by Ricky Fabulous’ atmospheric guitar. Their brass-laden track ‘Minor Swing’ is one of my all-time favourite trip hop tracks; up there with their peers Morcheeba and Zero 7. I first saw them at Secret Garden Party years ago, where they took to the main stage during a sunny afternoon. They completely blew me away. With pitch-perfect sound, Belleruche ran through all of their career highs and deBoer’s vocals were nothing short of captivating.
Last year they performed a wicked show at London’s XOYO (put on by the ever-dependable Soundcrash). The dark club setting was oddly perfect for their scratch-heavy soul and, as per usual, they had some great visuals to accompany the music. Reportedly, after four studio albums (which never managed to reach the masses they deserved), the band are going to take some time off and focus on solo projects. These past few months they’ve been travelling around Europe on something of a farewell tour, which they keep extending as the demand increases. Make sure you check them out in case you don’t get another opportunity.
