Mills grew up amongst the wealthy elite of New York City, US, attending boys private schools throughout his life. However, rather than chasing a high paying career as a lawyer or banker as most of his peers had, he decided to pursue a career in music, as a hip-hop artist under the name of Skizzy Mars.Whilst still in high school, Mills recorded much of the music that was to become his first singles, making music that sounded well above his years and experience. Full of intelligent lyrics and gentle flow, these early recordings showed a lot of promising for the young rising star.
Releasing his first single, “Possibilities,” his success has been rapid, with his second, “Douchebag,” becoming a critical success, resulting in significant hype building around the artist. His meticulous delivery and unorthodox production has made him stand out from the crowd, whilst still drawing comparisons with Drake, Wiz Khalifa and Kanye West.
Mills had an interest in music from an early age, initially attracted to alternative/indie rock bands, such as The Killers and Death Cab for Cutie. Mills then turned to hip-hop, enjoying the music of Kid Cudi and Kanye West, although his fondness for rock did not disappear. Mills often raps over indie rock tracks, making his music stand out from the crowd, sampling the entire track, guitars included, as opposed to just the beat. He has used tracks such as Foster the People’s “Houdini” and Grouplove’s “Colours” to showcase his rapping talent, which often is full of metaphor and pop-culture references. Mills signed to Sony/ATV Music Publishing for the release of his debut album. His mixtape, “Phases,” featuring contributions from G-Eazy and DJ Carnage.
