Thebe Neruda Kgositsile, who is better known as his pseudonym, Earl Sweatshirt, has had such a fruitful career up until the present, having being discovered by hip hop heavyweight, Tyler, The Creator, through MySpace. He went on to join Tyler’s rap group who go by the name “Odd Future”. Tyler took on his protégé Earl, and went on to produce his debut full-length album, which was released on March 31st 2010 as a free digital download.
Despite all of this success, his Mother, due to finding himself in trouble frequently, sent Earl to a private school in Samoa. He earned his stripes and a couple of academic years later, returned to LA, where he resumed his hip-hop career in full swing. He earned himself 50,000 followers on Twitter due to the release of a new song on his website entitled “Home”. 2012 was a big year for Earl Sweatshirt, as he was featured on the track “Super Rich Kids” from Frank Oceans’ debut album and he released his first solo single since his return from Samoa, entitled “Chum”. He also began work on his second studio album, “Doris”.
It is no surprise that Earl Sweatshirt has been nominated for the BET Hip Hop “Rookie of the Year” Award, and has made multiple TV Show appearances.
I think everyone has that one artist who when you start talking about them your close friends all start to roll their eyes, because they know your level of obsession with their music and once you start talking you won't stop... for me that artist is without a doubt Earl Sweatshirt. If he releases a song, is featured on one, or simply endorses another artist I am the first to know. I have seen him in concert twice now since he has been back in the states, the first time driving all the way across Virginia for the show, the second time driving about 7 hours to North Carolina, and despite the damage to my gas tank and bank account I have absolutely zero regrets. He puts on an incredible show, usually featuring at least one of his DJs Lucas or Taco, and I have never been so content to get elbowed in the face/have my feet stomped on by strangers simply because I know it was all a product of our reaction to his music. His lyrics speak to my heart and his attitude live is one that not only makes me laugh but also keeps me enthralled the entire time he is one stage. I could continue to go on an on about his poetic talent, hilarious persona, and intelligent outlook on life-but I will just leave it at if you're not with Sweatshirt yet, get that way.
