This concert brings together the saxophone orchestras of the Tilburg Conservatory and the ArtEZ Conservatory, conducted by Juani Palop Tecles and Ties Mellema. The collaboration grew out of years of exchange in education and projects, as well as a shared vision of sound, ensemble playing, and repertoire.
The combined saxophone orchestra enables a rich palette of tonal colors. The program moves between counterpoint, lyricism, and rhythmic energy, featuring music by Johann Sebastian Bach and Maurice Ravel, alongside contemporary works by Bart de Vrees and Henry Cowell. Also featured is Alexander Glazunov’s Saxophone Concerto in an arrangement for saxophone sextet, with Juani Palop Tecles as the soloist.
Students from both conservatories rehearse and perform together, focusing on balance, articulation, intonation, timing, and ensemble awareness. The emphasis lies on listening and shaping the music collectively, rather than on individual profiling.
