Maybe it’s the advent of the internet that’s made the idea of a “collective” so popular as opposed to a band. Now that the world is a far smaller place than it was before it’s a lot easier to directly make contact with artists whose work one admires and also keep in contact with people who one might lose touch with otherwise. All this makes the prospect of an artist or group of artists creating work with a variety of separate collaborators who they may or may not work with again a far more workable possibility than it’s ever been before.
However, in the form of La Femme we have a band that combines the concepts of the band and the collective in a thoroughly modern twist on the traditional rock band. The band writes most of the music themselves, before collaborating with anyone who complements the sound of the song in order to complete it. Not only are they trailblazers in that respect, but they set a very high standard for anyone who wants to take after them.
La Femme began with a collaboration between guitarist Sacha Got and keyboardist Marlon Magnée. The pair met in high school where they became firm friends, and were soon making music together armed with only a guitar and Garageband. The duo would only become a band when Magnée left Biarritz for Paris, where he met the bands rhythm section, Sam Lefevre (bass guitar) and their future drummer Noah Delmas. Once Got joined the trio in Paris, they named themselves La Femme and began searching for a lead singer. They stumbled upon Clémence Quélennec short while later and with their first full line up completed, began gigging around France.
Since then they’ve released three E.Ps and one studio album, titled “Psycho Tropical Berlin”, that came out in 2013. They’ve become sensations in their home land, earning the 2014 Victoires de la Musique award for best album by a new artist and they’ve made a name for themselves the world over as well, being covered in the likes of NME Magazine and on Pitchfork.com. Overall, they’re a band whose musical style reflects their creative dynamic, a mix of retro cool and futurist edginess. They’re going to be a very big name soon, and we should all join them for the ride. Highly recommended.

The La Femme show was great fun and very high production. The lack of understanding French language didn’t decrease my enjoyment of the show in the slightest… in fact, it may have improved it. It was a great dancey crowd.
If you haven’t heard them, they are a fun electronic surf rock inspired French band. Their songs are all in French, but are musically interesting enough that I enjoy them without knowing a word of what they're saying. You can hear a 60s beach rock sound, but they also have a modern electronic dance overlay. Their album name Psycho Tropical Berlin tells it all about their sound. Psychedelic Surf Eurodance.
To give you an idea of the show, they have a lot of equipment. As a six person band, you would expect that to be the case. Indeed, they had six keyboards. But, this was not only six people in front of six keyboards… not at all. There were guitars, bass, two sets of drums, a Theremin, and much more! That’s right, they travelled from France with a Theremin, which seems like a fragile instrument to me. Not only that, but they brought their Orange Speakers.
In addition to seeing them with all of their various equipment and trading places between all of the interments, they had elaborate personas and costumes. It wasn’t too gimmicky, it mostly just seemed like they really enjoyed hitting up American thrift stores along the way and dressing in a persona. It was still fun to see them mix up clothes and dance around in a gorilla mask when one didn’t have too much to do for a song. They had limited interaction with the crowd due to the language barrier, but they did make an effort to speak to us in some heavily accented English on how much they’ve enjoyed the tour.
They were around afterward selling merchandise and talking to people. One of them lost their wallet while they were dancing like crazy on stage. I don’t know if she got it back or not. I hope so.
Amazing show. They are better live than on their records. Humble, fun, interactive with great stage presence. They were stylish, funny, with flawless sound. They had the Halloween crowd dancing with them the entire show. The band was symphonic, great vocals, instrumentals and sound mixing. I go to quite a few concerts. They were definitely my favorite live show in a couple of years and have made it into my top 5. I highly recommend La Femme. If the band is reading this, merci fois milli.
Really nice concert we truly enjoy our time with La Femme always good to spend some time between frenchies especially when you're living abroad.
You were amazing at Rock en Seine !
I would have love you to sing more of your new album (which is amazing, I have to say)
Sometimes the sound was a bit too loud and we couldn't hear properly the singers.
But the most disappointment was the end !!! PLEASE COME BACK FOR ONE LAST SONG FOR FUCK'S SAKE !!!
Sick show from these French guys, great energy and great crowd, very engaged - lots of dancing and jumping around!
Just a tip for the Venue O2 Empire:
The cloakroom had just one person dealing with everyone`s coats and bags (hundreds of them)... very long queues before and after the show... Next time please be more prepared! :)
The concert of La Femme in Pumpehuset was amazing. I did know them from their records and enjoyed their music but live it gets even better. If you enjoy psychedelic surf rock and like dancing just give it a go you will not regret it.
Nothing short of amazing! Fun, lively talent. People danced the entire show. I accidentally fell upon their first cd at the library, I've been infatuated since. I hope they stick around and keep making music together-
Very lively and entertaining, the young Latin crowd made it even more lively. I expected a slower electro rythm and it turned out to be "rock". We had a lot of fun with my friends!
They were fantastic! Amazing energy and performance. It was a little rowdy so if you really only like their softer music then it might not be for you. I had a great time though.
