Biografia
It’s fitting that this band takes their name from the Yiddish word meaning “Crazy”. Most things about them don’t make a lick of sense at first, everything from their songs to their lyrical themes to the fact that this band has had an album chart in the top 20 of the Billboard albums chart. It’s definitely difficult to wrap your head around, but if anything, they’ve earned it.
The band formed in the college town of Umeå out of the ashes of a previous band that lead guitarist Fredrik Thordendal formed in 1985. The band as we know it today formed two years later but didn’t release anything until their debut E.P in 1989, entitled “Psykisk Testbild”. Only 1000 copies were pressed but it was enough to get them a deal with German metal legends Nuclear Blast.
“Contradictions Collapse”, their debut record, was recorded shortly afterwards and released in 1991. Between albums they released two E.Ps, “None” came first in 1994 and the second “Selfcaged”, was to be released in the same year. However, due to a freak accidents sustained in their day jobs both Thordendal and drummer Tomas Haake were out of action for the year, so “Selfcaged” came in 1995 instead.
It was just as well, the band embarked on their first major European tour supporting the might Machine Head and their second album “Destroy Erase Improve” was released in July. The album got the same critical acclaim as their debut, and eventually went on to be highly influential in the djent and Mathcore scenes of the late 2000’s.
Since then the band has received copious attention for their instrumental skills, broad experimental streak and intense live shows. They’ve supported the likes of Slayer and Tool and have performed on the Ozzfest tour. For a band this wilfully extreme and defiant, this is a shining example of how sometimes, quality and hard work can win out in the end.

I had always been a fan of metal music, but I wanted to take it to the next level. I needed to get into extreme metal.
Now I wasn't sure what I was getting myself into when I first started listening to Meshuggah, but boy was I amazed. With everything from their awesome and fast fretboarding to their double bass peddles, I was bought hook like and sinker, and knew I had to see them live. I researched online the dates and cities they would be playing in, and they were playing in my city right in the middle of their tour. I bought my tickets online right then and there.
Fast forward to the date of the concert and its just me going alone. No one else I know likes extreme metal, let alone Meshuggah. It was a very dark venue with a very dark theme. Finally it goes pitch black and you hear a double bass pedal playing and you know its about to get BRUTAL! Finally lights flash and you see all 5 members on stage asking us if were ready to rock! The light show was so intense because it was matching the beat of the double bass pedal. They mostly played stuff off of their latest albums obZen and Koloss.
What can be said about a Meshuggah show on May 16th, 2019?! This band has certainly earned its swag among metal fandom. The intense energy with which the swedes brutalize crowds of fans that attend its concerts has become legendary and in this NYC show it showed no signs of waning.
Casual in its brutality and armed with intricate technicality, the harsh riffage and odd timings churn the crowd into an all encompassing mosh pit, which much like a black hole, it swallows up anyone near it. The visuals, from the backdrops to the light show, are as striking as is its performance of a set mixing newer material with the older...oh, and the sound production is top notch as well.
Do yourself a favor and prepare for battle when you attend a Meshuggah show. And if the pit takes you, know that it might prove difficult to go home unmarked. You will witness greatness.
They kicked off their 2016 North American tour at House of Blues at Lake Buena Vista (Orlando), FL. High on Fire is on Disney's seemingly arbitrary/irrational "Bands that will not play here" list so they did not open. Crowbar was scheduled to open as a replacement but canceled all Florida shows after Hurricane Matthew blew through the area. Local band opened instead.
The setlist was pretty awesome. Played 4 tracks of their new album, "The Violent Sleep of Reason" & a fantastic selection of older tracks. See setlist here: http://www.setlist.fm/setlist/meshuggah/2016/house-of-blues-lake-buena-vista-fl-3bfd1000.html
The light show was spectacular & the band absolutely crushed their material. Crowd was way into it. Highly recommended if you are a fan of their music.
I witnessed the great Meshuggah at 170 Russell st, Melbourne, I thought it an interesting venue for such a band to be playing at but the space deterred a monstrous mosh pit from developing which was the intention of many lively fans. It was as expected and didn't lack any substance, a good pinch of spices and progression. Rhythmic and fast paced with moments of slower melodic rhythm encouraged old fans and new fans to be challenged by the huge noise which for some could be an overwhelming barrage of sound, and for some, a welcoming onslaught of mostly unintelligible vocals
God lyd, hører tonene ganske greit! Eneste var at at man nesten ikke klarte å høre Nostrum, men den er så avansert uansett at den skal være sånn. Kjempebra opptreden, men kunne vart ENDA lenger.
This is the most progressive band I ever went on. The show flabbergasting. My neck is hurting me of all the headbanging :D :D Matching with the rhythm requires true mastery of listening to the materials. I cannot imagine, what it requires to play it. And suddenly it ended. I lost sense of time passing. Meshuggah turn time in reverse their own Clockwork.
Insane! Insane! Insane! Insane! Insane! Insane! Insane! Insane! Insane! Insane! Insane! Insane! Insane! Insane! Insane! Insane! Insane! Insane! Insane! Insane! Insane! Insane! Insane! Insane! Insane! It was a decent show. Saw them perform live a couple years ago in Milan. Better show back then. Now, despite the sound being way better it seemed a little bland. They didn't strike any chords (pun intended) with me this time. The Haunted were much better, including at involving the public.
Awesome gig. Meshuggah are heavy enough to create their own black hole, the combo of their music and the amazing light show creates a he'll of an atmosphere. Enough to give you a proper hangover without alcohol. Im surprised no one had a fit!!
