Wavves is a band that dominated the majority of my high school years. The ones that mattered, anyway. I finally got to see them at Lollapalooza in 2013 and it was one of the greatest moments of my life.
Five years is a relatively short time for a band to have such enormous success, however Nathan Williams somehow made it work. Lo-fi production at first due to limited resources, then kept to retain the feel of Williams' angst-ridden, self-deprecating lyrics helped lead a revival of surf rock. Relatable to youth on both coasts (I myself hailing from New York,) Wavves quickly found a niche market.
"King of the Beach" is considered to be their first cohesive album and unlike most lo-fi artists that suddenly change sound when they get produced, Wavves only got better and knocked out one of the most relevant youth albums of the decade.
Wavves' set at Lollapalooza was anticipated by a huge crowd of youth dressed in their festival best and ready to lose their minds in the music. When the bass was tuned to the opening riff of "Linus Spacehead" before the set even started the crowd went wild, proving that Wavves' fans are attentive and ready for anything. The set was opened with the newly infamous "King of the Beach" and also contained hits such as "Bug" and "Green Eyes" along with tracks from the new album such as "Demon to Lean On" and the title track "Afraid of Heights."
The crowd was filled with an eclectic group of various objects being thrown around, moshing, and crowdsurfers eagerly egged on by the band and led to an unforgettable experience.
I can honestly say that Wavves was the best concert of my life. The show stared with Swmrs who, while not very well known, got everyone jumping around and hyped for the night. Next was Twin Peaks who are a personal favorite so I already knew they would be awesome. They had amazing energy an very danceable songs which was perfect for the crowd. Finally, Wavves. starting out with Sail to The Sun was a smart decision because everyone was instantly singing along. There were tons of crowd surfers the entire night with members of Swmrs and Twin Peaks joining in with the crowd. It happens to be Stephen Popes 30th birthday so everyone sang to him which ended with a kiss from Nathan. After the show, Cadien of Twin Peaks was saying how whis night was for sure one of the craziest shows they've played. Even though I went home with sore legs and drenched in sweat it was a night that I never wanted to end.
I'M SO HAPPY I ATTENDED. It was way cooler than I expected (and I expected a lot). It was one of those concerts where they have only played a couple of songs but you have already decided that you are going to see them again as soon as you have the opportunity. Be aware that there is a mosh pit (security had to help a little girl that was being crushed)
Uhh Nathan fuckin Williams crowd surfed and I got to help hold him up, so that was pretty great. Also when I was crowd surfing at one point my phone definitely fell out of my pocket, but the crowd was really great and someone found it and turned it into the security for me! It was a really great show and I had an awesome time!
The overall show was fantastic; They kept a a steady energy throughout the whole set that made it IMPOSSIBLE for you to not want to move. Totally worth it. Although the venue had some sound difficulties, they didn’t stop and they continued to play. Bravo.
Awesome show! Didn't realize there'd be a mosh pit but in hindsight, it was appropriate. The openers Steep Leans and Twin Peaks were great, as well. Nathan seems like a chill dude. He was hanging out with the crowd earlier in the night.
It was a a great show. A less talk more rock show where they blasted through tons of songs. The crowd was energetic and it was an overall fun time. Good venue as well. I would definitely see wavves again if i get the chance.
It was super rad! I went with my best friend and we both had a blast. I want to see all of the hip bands again for sure. Hopefully you guys come back to NYC soon. Thanks for a rad tiempooo dudes :)

Awesome show, they played in Sacramento which isn't too common. New stuff and old but overall a good mix of their albums. Glad I got to see them live and was not disappointed, very energetic crowd and music.
