Consisting of Honus Honus (vocals, synthesiser, guitars, electric organ), Pow Pow (drums, percussion, programming, samples), Shono Murphy (guitar, trumpet, percussion, vocals) and Brown Sugar (Schatzaphone, bass, saxophone, keyboards, vocals), Man Man came together in 2003, releasing their debut album, "The Man in a Blue Turban with a Face," on Ace Fu Records in 2004. It was not until after their sophomore release, "Six Demon Bag," in 2006 that Man Man began to tour extensively, boosted by the positive critical response the album received.
In 2007, they gained a high profile support slot with indie stalwarts, Modest Mouse, performing as their opening act on several dates of their US tour. Sportswear giants Nike then used "10 lb Mustache" for a series of commercials that featured Rainn Wilson, exposing their music to a whole new audience. This new exposure was bolstered by the television show, "Weeds," using several songs in one episode
In 2008, their third album, "Rabbit Habits," was released on ANTI- records, embarking on a North American tour shortly after alongside Yeasayer and Tim Fite. Man Man also became frequent performers upon the festival circuit, frequenting Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival, All Tomorrow's Parties, Primavera Sound and Voodoo Experience. They have gone on to play with an eclectic mix of artists, including Cat Power, Aereogramme and Bardo Pond.
"Rabbit Habits" and their subsequent releases, 2011's "Life Fantastic" and 2013's "On Oni Pond," moved towards a more standard indie-pop sound. However, they still maintained their off-beat aesthetic which has continued to make them an original, exciting act. Their 2013 single, "Head On (Hold On To Your Heart," achieved their biggest chart success, reaching number 32 on Billboards Alternative Songs Chart.

Man Man, Murder By Death, Samantha Crain at Black Cat Feb 7, 2013
I was super excited to finally see Man Man live, though I didn't really do my homework before the show, so I was surprised by how experimental their back catalogue is. It was still really fun though. Not weird experimental, but unexpected influences experimental. I liked it, but it wasn't the kind of show you could sing along to. The performers had a lot of energy but couldn't move around on stage much because of the large keyboards that dominated the stage. That didn't bother me though. What did bother me was how late their set started, I left at 12:10 and I think they still had a lot more material.
Murder by Death was really fun live, though I'm listening to their recorded music right now and am unimpressed. Worth seeing live, though. They use a cello and accordion, the singer has a deep voice, the lyrics are funny, depressing, demented. The singer engaged the audience well. Samantha Crain had a great voice and did an acoustic set. None of her songs made an impression on me, but she sounded really good. Verdicts: Man Man: Good enough live. Worth seeing once. Murder by Death: Very good live show. Better than their recorded music. Highly recommend. Samantha Crain: The kind of act that would be better viewed seated in an intimate space.

Philadelphia experimental outfit Man Man emerged onto the circuit with a bang in 2003 and they have maintained a consistent lineup ever since. You can feel the vibes of friendship radiating from the stage as these guys do not only play together, they clearly do everything together and are wholly enjoying this awesome experience of travelling and playing to their fanbase.
The huge array of instruments on offer means the stage looks cluttered before the band has even stepped out. There are huge roars of applause and cheers from the audience as the group practically bound out and hype the crowd up before tearing into the off key beats of 'End Boss'. The gig is a showcase of 'On Oni Pond' yet the older fans are rewarded for their loyalty with airings of tracks including the bizarre 'Push the Eagle's Stomach' and the jovial 'Young Einstein on the Beach'. There is so much to look at it could actually make your head spin yet it all comes to a colourful crescendo for 'Sarsparillsa' before the group bound once again off the stage as the audience cheer.

They are a fun lively show! Great entertainment! I had never seen them before and my husband had never heard of them before, but we'd definitely see them again. Strummers is a great venue too.

Every show I see, Man Man keeps getting better and better. Definitely a show to check out, they are not only talented musicians, but put on a great show as well
