dan le sac Vs Scroobius Pip are one of the most unique projects to come out of UK hip hop in…forever. The UK isn’t known for interesting hip hop, but this duo deserve to be ranked alongside our grime crossover artists like Dizzee Rascal and Wiley for making a US-orientated genre relevant to us Brits.
Although not strictly hip hop in the most authentic sense of the term, DJ-producer dan le sac and spoken word poet Scroobius Pip make something that certainly connects with it. The music is predominantly electronic music, with programmed beats and looped keys and guitars, with dan le sac occasionally providing clean singing and Pip always bring his distinctive spoken word raps. I was a huge fan of their breakthrough single ‘Thou Shalt Always Kill’; I had never heard anything like it before. So when they came touring to Cornwall I went to see them and was so impressed that I’ve bought all their records ever since. dan le sac is a sorely underrated producer, offering experimental interludes between his melody-driven songs, while Pip is one of the most unique entertainers we’ve got to offer, spitting thought-provoking poetry about everything and anything. The soaring electronic crescendo at the end of ‘Letter from God to Man’ was incredible to see live, as was Pip utilising different characters (and costumes) during ‘Angles’.
I’ve seen them a bunch of times over the years – including when they’ve toured supporting their more recent albums – and their confidence as performers has just grown and grown. I feel proud to have witnessed their evolution from their humble beginnings.
