Fergie: My first free concert as an intern for a major record label. Although I wasn’t the biggest Black Eyed Peas fan, you can imagine my excitement at the opportunity to go to a concert for free! So my college roommate and best friend and I met at the Wiltern Theatre in LA, a little skeptical but waiting to see what the Fergie show would bring. As we waited, we passed the time by getting some food, people-watching, and oh…taking a picture with Taboo from the Black Eyed Peas (who just happened to be roaming around the audience). Much to my (pleasant) surprise, as soon as Fergie got on the stage, I loved every single moment of her show. The woman has pipes! She can really blow. As another perk of my internship, I had also been given a free copy of her debut solo album “The Dutchess,” but I had not taken the time to listen to it before this show. So of course I expected the singles “Fergalicious” and Glamorous” to be crowd favorites. However, when I heard the other songs like “Clumsy,” “Mary Jane Shoes,” and my personal favorites “London Bridge” and “Pedestal,” I was really shocked at how much I enjoyed them. And then when she slowed it down and got rid of the background dancers to focus on singing “Big Girls Don’t Cry,” and “Finally” – with just herself, her mic, and her pink Cinderella dress – I was BLOWN AWAY. After “Finally,” it was over. I was sold. I got in the car, put that album on, and listened to it on the drive all the way home. And on the drive to work the next day. And basically for about a month afterwards. It has been a long time coming for Fergie’s second solo album, but I am excited to hear that 2014 sounds like the year for it to finally happen. If her work since “The Dutchess” is any indication (“A Little Party Never Killed Nobody” from The Great Gatsby soundtrack is a KILLER dance track) – I have high expectations and am looking forward to hearing what comes next from the Fergalicious Dutchess herself!
