When the Swedes get it right, they really get it right. And Niki & the Dove are a great example.
After forming in 2010, Malin Dahlström, Gustaf Karlöf, Magnus Boqvist released an EP, ‘The Drummer,’ a year later. And then they followed it up with their debut LP, ‘Instinct,’ in 2012. While they don’t have that much as far as song catalogue, the band seems to make up for it with their performances. Like the types of electronic, bubbly sounds they use in the music, Nick & the Dove are part eccentric, part goth and all party. Regardless of how they decide to present themselves that night (or day), they make their stage their own and produce an interesting performance that’s not only appealing to your ears but also your eyes.
Now I’m not saying that they bring all the special effects and pyrotechnics. However, Malin’s accessories seem to be enough of the glitz that one can get from a Niki & the Dove show. While we’ve seen her performing in more throwback vintage ensembles, she has been known to wear headdresses and neon makeup to performances. In a sense, it’s like she’s channeling her inner (and more colourful) Stevie Nicks, which gets strong when she performs songs like ‘The Fox’ and ‘DJ Ease My Mind.’ But once they start playing, you’re quickly reminded in the melodies and electronic layers that they aren’t an American rock band but an electro pop group from Sweden.
