When I saw Nitzer Ebb, I was already a long time fan. This dark EBM group from Essex was introduced to me in my formative years and will always be one of my favorites in this genre. Upon arrival to the venue, we noticed that the crowd was a bit on the rough side - which is expected.
Take it from an experience concert goer: avoid the front center unless you are into hard core mosh pits that are guaranteed to break out at these shows.
After watching a few openers, Douglas McCarthy came out in his signature black suit, aviators, and slicked back hair. He carried an air of menace and stalked the stage like a black panther. They had not played our area for a while so the crowd was a little keyed up and were starting to push and shove as the aggressive music started to take hold.
As I watched, I could not help compare them to newer groups such as Combichrist or older contemporaries such as Skinny Puppy. They brought out an instrument containing massive metal pipes to close the show and the sound was so intense and dark, it seemed just perfect somehow. The crowd pushed and shoved to the sound and they raised their fists in the air as if in some tribal ecstasy.
I’m not a huge fan of Nitzer Ebb, but a lot of my friends are crazy about them, so I decided last minute to see the Toronto show at Danforth Hall. The decision was made after I realized that “Liebknecht“ is Daniel Myer’s project (from Haujobb). So, I bought their T-shirt (very cool design) and enjoyed “Liebknecht” set a lot, although that bass was so loud/powerful at moments.
Anyway, I decided to see only a few Nitzer Ebb songs and to call it a day.
And then, the magic happened:
Douglas McCarthy is such a charismatic frontman, that even without a proper band on the stage, he makes late eighties’ sound vibrate so fresh. I saw the entire show, plus the encore. They’re amazing! I think that everything about Nitzer Ebb aged very well! See them if you have a chance!
I didn't expect much from yet another concert of a band which is long past it's prime. But I was pleasantly suprised to find NE delivering an energetic and very lively show to a very receptive and positive audience. Particularly the later material ages well and was more fun to listen to than at it's time of publication. Great evening!
Great,
Energetic and non-stop moves from the band, all through the the concert, no dull moments.
Amazing stage performance and bouncing rhythms by vocalist and the brilliant keyboard players!
This is just a simple review, from a fan and non-musican, doesn't have to be 30 words.
Broken Ego is looking forward to open the evening for Nitzer Ebb in Vienna on April 24. If you haven't heard from us, we are from Vienna and play Electronic Pop-Rock. More info: https://linktr.ee/brokenegomusic
