Sweden is widely known for all this pop and ABBA. However, The Sounds have shattered that idea with their frenetic indie rock. Playing packed clubs since the late 90s, the band has released five albums including their most recent 2013 record, ‘Weekend.’ Considering how many years they’ve been together, they look just as young and play just as hard as they did when they first played their first LP, ‘Living in America.’ What keeps them song? Perhaps it’s just the post-punk-meets-indie-rock sound they play or it could also be the energy that just explodes through every venue.
While they don’t necessarily appeal to everyone, I started to understand the great fandom around when they played the Music Hall of Williamsburg in Brooklyn. Taking the stage, singer Maja Ivarsson sauntered toward her mic stand with a drink in one hand and an unlit cigarette in the other. Despite the New York City law that bans smoking indoors, the platinum blonde frontwoman didn’t care and lit her cigarette in front of the crowd and took a few drags before getting into the first song. Clearly there’s nothing more rock and roll than that. While some may use the cigarettes as a shtick, it was obvious that this was commonplace for Maja. And despite all the cigarettes throughout the set, her voice sound pitch-perfect and hardly had any rough edges. She’s just an animal.
With their balls out, raging sound, The Sounds are meant to play small clubs that get crowded and sweaty where people can feed off of each other’s pheromones that will lead to one unforgettable night.
Great show, great sound. The band were out on time, they played like and hour and a half. I'm not a fan, since i was just there to acompany a couple of friends, but those guys stole my attention. We met the band outside the venue, they are so humble and nice, I talk to Maja about our children haha both are named the same... and she hugged me a lot! We have a great time!
Non-stop mosh-pit dance party. Triumphant return to Amerika. Playing their sophomore album end to end followed by hits from their first, third and forth albums. Debuting the first single Thrill, from their forthcoming album. The audience was singing along with the Maja for beginning to the end of the show.
