ROMERO, ROMERO, WHEREFORE ART THOU?
Having just seen Romero in my hometown of Birkenhead, I can tell you exactly where they are, and that is occupying a special space in my heart - rarely has a band had such an impact - all the way from Melbourne, they brought it all and I got it immediately. Comparisons to Blondie are too easy, but not unfair - this band can play, and what they play is good old-fashioned rock and roll, updated for the modern age - you can call it garage, you can throw a pop-punk label at it, but it is drop dead honest, they have the songs, and it works brilliantly live. Singer Alanna is the perfect frontperson - she sings with power and beauty, and evokes a distant memory of Olivia Newton John, but only if ONJ took a much more rocky road instead of a poppy path, and eschewed smooching John Travolta in favour of nipping out the back for a cheeky spliff by the bins. Duly. Yet. I love this band.
