I discovered Genevieve many months ago from the Spotify 'Discover Weekly' playlist. I really enjoyed her music and I subscribed to her email list and followed her on Social Media. I was lucky enough to be chosen from among her supporters to win a Skype conversation with her and some of her merch. She also included me and my bestie as guests to a show near my area where she was opening for "A Great Big World" on their 2016 tour.
Her set had about 6-7 songs, about four from her EP. First off, I was absolutely floored by her voice. I'm not exaggerating when I say it may be the best voice I've ever heard. She can strike so many different tones and expressions with it, going from extremely perfectly executed vibrato to delicately emotional words to straight out power and energy. Absolutely stunned, she was fantastic.
As for the show itself, it was lacking in energy a bit. Her accompanist, Chris, was really talented (and funny) but he was trying to do the work of a few people and was only able to play one instrument at a time, occasionally adding synth loops. They also chose more relaxed songs until the final song, "Colors." While she tried hard to bring up the energy levels with dancing and her powerful voice, it was a little hard to overcome the single track backgrounds and calm song choices. Adding more synthesized loops/drum beats could definitely add a bit more to the overall power of the performance, but she did execute the slower songs perfectly. So great show if slightly lacking in energy.
Another thing about her is that she is wonderful and down to earth and happy to talk to her fans and anyone. She came out and took pictures with anyone who wanted them and was very friendly and warm, never speaking like an artist to a fan but more like a friend to a friend. Really special.
So great show overall and I definitely recommend that you make it out to see her; I know I'll be going again for sure next time she comes anywhere near me!
