Most of the action at TRANZAC takes place in the Southern Cross lounge, named after the constellation which appears on the flags of both New Zealand and Australia. With woodgrain accents and warm lighting, it’s an intimate venue for all manner of musical performances, from authentic Irish folk singers to fusion jazz quartets to hardcore punk bands. Yet music is not Tranzac’s only cultural focus; there are semi-regular evenings devoted to poetry readings and film exhibitions as well. There’s also a well-stocked bar, with the always amicable bartenders ready to quench your thirst with a wide variety of domestic ales and hard-to-find microbrews.
