Songstress, Mayra Andrade gracefully takes to the stage with a microphone in hand ready to deliver her Cape Verde flavoured jazz music to adoring patrons. Tonight is in promotion of her album “Lovely Difficult, which is her fourth album. In comparison to her prior three albums, she delivers a more commercial sound, still featuring elements of what she has written before with the traditional Cape Verde influence but is now heading more for a pop sound that firmly fuses pop to her accolades. Despite this, it doesn’t sound as though she is writing this music to sell millions and it sounds as though she retains a lot of her dignity especially with this live performance right now. The patrons this evening find themselves dancing a little bit more than they’re used to, to songs such as “Build it Up” and “We Used to Call it Love”. She finishes this set on a track called “Meu Farol” which is the final song on the album. It’s no wonder that from this performance, and from this album that it was nominated ifor the Best World Music Album at the 2014 Victoires de la Musique.
Lovely artist. The arrangements and production quality on her cds are excellent. But unfortunately the concert was a downer. The band was all over the place and the mixing was atrocious. Not sure what they wee thinking, but they certainly didn't back Mayra. They more or less drowned her out. The venue was way too small, too crowded and too hot. The whole thing was surprisingly amateurish.
An epic performance! What an amazing vocalist and sweet soul. I would give my money again to see her. Mayra’s new album Manga bangs! Up tempo beats, modern sounds different from her her usual traditional Cape-Verdian music. Absolute top!
