Songs of flux, confusion and empowerment; the Minnesotan trio perform their new record Double Negative alongside songs from across their 25 year career.
Distorting their Americana-tinged vocals with glitches and drones, Double Negative signals a continuation of a more electronic approach, taking their indie-rock sound in a distinctive direction. Reflecting on a changing America – a country they say they hardly recognise anymore - this disruption and upheaval is felt throughout the record as their mutated guitar songs become something more unsettling and harder to place.
Alongside other so-called ‘slowcore’ bands such as Codeine, Galaxie 500 and Bedhead, Low stood out from the grunge-dominated guitar music scene of the early nineties with delicate, spatial indie-rock records. Mimi Parker’s minimal drums set the tone for Alan Sparhawk’s guitar to gently pick over steady grinding basslines, all illuminated by heavenly vocal harmonies.
