In 2003, Hutchinson released his debut album ‘That Could’ve Gone Better’ via his own label Let’s Break Records, before gaining the recognition of Madonna and being signed to Maverick Records. As Hutchinson prepared to release his major-label debut, Maverick Records collapsed, and so the folk-pop artist recorded and released the E.P ‘Before I Sold Out’ on his own label in 2006, before following up with his second album ‘Sounds Like This’ in 2007; it received rave reviews from Perez Hilton, a prestigious blogger and television star, before peaking at number seven in the top 10 albums downloaded online.
Having recognized the appreciation Hutchinson’s work received, Warner Bros Records re-released ‘Sounds Like This’ in 2008. It featured the hit single ‘Rock and Roll’, which peaked at number nine in the Australian ARIA Singles Chart and number four in the New Zealand Singles chart, whilst the record also featured on the soundtrack to the film Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants 2. In the years of 2012 and 2014, Hutchinson released two more albums - ‘Moving up, Living Down’ and ‘Pure Fiction’.
Hutchinson has taken influence from the Beatles, Stevie Wonder and Elvis Costello in his approach to music writing, and has been compared to the likes of Jason Mraz, Cat Stevens and Billy Joel. The Washingtonian is accustomed to playing the guitar and the piano, whilst he also achieved second place at the 2002 Los Angeles Songwriter’s Grand Slam. Hutchinson obtains a loyal following, having played at The Do Good Fest, whilst also performing to fans on The Ones to Watch via Skype; his material has been described as “a party in your mouth” by the Botanist.
Perez Hilton may bash and make fun of a lot of celebrities, but he has also launched a lot of popularity for music artist who have true talent. Eric Hutchinson was one of these artists who really impressed Perez, and for good reason. The multi-talented, piano and guitar playing, singer-songwriter bleeds talent, and has a knack for radiating exuberance. When listening to his music, you can’t not be instantly put in a good mood.
I was lucky enough to see him live before he exploded in the online world, back when he was signed with Madonna’s Maverick Records before it tanked. He was still in the middle of writing and recording his album, so the show was a way for him to play and explore his music and get feedback before putting it on his “Sounds Like This” album (he eventually recorded and released this album on his own before Warner Music Group picked him up). Some of these songs were “OK, Its Alright With Me,” and “Rock and Roll,” and he would switch between playing his guitar and playing the in house piano.
He is also absolutely adorably sweet. When he plays he gets lost in his music, and will make faces when appropriate with his lyrics. He has got a contagious smile and would have small conversations in between songs.
