Formerly of the name Swiss before hearing of another Australian group with the same moniker, the group soon changed its name to Alpine in a continuation of the Swiss theme. Born out of a collaboration between high-school friends, one vocalist Phoebe Baker and guitarist Christian O’Brien, the pair later graduated and invited Lousia James to assist in their harmony-rich mix. The group later added the talents of keyboardist Tim Royal, bassist Ryan Lamb, and drummer Phil Tuckers to fill-out Alpine’s sound and recorded their debut demo. That demo reached the proficient ears of national radio Triple J and the group became indie-pop favourites without having played a show.
Following a month-long residency at the Melbourne club, Northcote Social Club, the band signed with Ivy League Records. Now with label backing Alpine’s issued their debut EP “Zürich” in November 2010 and embarked on their first national tour alongside Cloud Control, Jinga Safari, and the Naked and Famous. Ahead of their full-length album the six-piece released the single “Hands” in late 2011, which generated a significant amount of buzz for the band.
Issued in early 2010 Alpine’s debut studio album “A is for Alpine” topped the Australian iTunes chart and peaked at No. 11 on the Australian Albums Chart. Featuring a light, bright and charismatic sound the album earned favourable reviews and resulted in a nomination for Best Breakthrough Artist at the 2010 ARIA Music Awards. Following a successful national and U.S. tour, Alpine made their U.S. television debut on “Jimmy Kimmel Live!”, after which the group were dubbed the band to watch by Rolling Stone magazine. The full-length “Yuck” arrived in 2015 once again released on Ivy League Records.

Australian indie six piece Alpine have been making waves globally since the release of their immaculate debut album in 2012. The charming group are taking indie pop back to basics with danceable guitar hooks and mini anthem choruses. They promise a show of total fun and zero inhibitions and that is exactly what you are given.
From the moment they step out, you know you are in for a good night as every musician attempts to acknowledge every audience member personally. They demonstrate great musicianship during the opening pairing of 'Lovers 1' and 'Lovers 2'. Although the indie may sway more towards pop, there is great guitar and percussion elements present throughout the night. It is impossibly danceable so the crowd is moving all through the evening and Phoebe Baker thanks them for this despite it being incredibly warm in the intimate venue. She thanks them once more from the whole band and finish on an obvious high of 'Gasoline' and 'Villages' in quick succession.

For the last five years, I would say that indie pop is one of the styles of music that has been at the forefront of the charts. It’s highly accessible, it’s easy to listen to, it appeals to just about everyone and it’s commercial but credible. Alpine, the Australian outfit from Melbourne, Australia are one of those bands that follow suit with their catchy fun guitar riffs and huge melodic hooks in the chorus that always have people singing along. Their debut album, “A Is for Alpine” debuted at number 1 in the Australian iTunes chart and number 11 on the ARIA chart. Tonight is all about what this band can do live, with a huge audience to bounce off. Their dual XX chromosome fronted style is one of those features that keeps this band fresh, and always the talk of the town wherever they visit. Songs of theirs such as “Big Roads” and Black Jumpers”, are songs that patrons leave the venue singing out loud on their commutes back home.

Seeing Alpine is definitely something I'd do again and again. The energy in the room was so warm and fun. Phoebe's stage presence was enthralling, the way she interacted with the crowd, her body language and eye-contact, felt so genuine and intimate--honestly, I was a little flushed. The openers, The Architects of Sound and Ro, were fantastic as well, and really set the mood and got the crowd warmed up. I can't wait for their next show!

Alpine was amazing!! I will definitely be seeing them again! and the venue was lovely! minus the no passouts for the venue :) They music was just awesome! Dorsey fins before Alpine came out were great too!
