Georgia-born gangsta rapper Gorilla Zoe (aka Alonzo Mathis) sure knows how to bring the noise. Setting stages alight (figuratively, that is, although Gorilla has been known for some er, wild, stage antics) since 2006 with his Boyz N Da Hood days, Gorilla Zoe released his first solo album, ‘Welcome To The Zoo’, the following year, to wide appreciation from the hip hop community, as well as his fans. Coming from the ever-thriving rap scene of Atlanta, Georgia, the rapper even payed homage to his hometown with an EP named ‘I Am Atlanta’ in 2011. his beats are hard-hitting and his spitting is a blend of hoarse and silky, with harmonious backing vocals to complement his hooks and basslines- perfect for his classic hip hop sound and dance-inducing tracks. When I caught the rapper at a show on Austin, Texas’ infamous 6th Street, it was a cracking show filled with hip hop heads ready to wave their arms, shake their asses and scream along to the choruses. Needless to say I wasn’t disappointed, and Gorilla Zoe played a banging set of his fan favourites, like ‘White Boy Wasted’ and ‘Bottle Poppin’, and as an added bonus the star stayed onstage way after the gig was supposed to finish, keeping the swaying crowd far more entertained than a zoo ever could. Don’t miss this playa in action if you get the chance!
From his unforgiving attitude to his swagger on stage, Gorilla Zoe was one of the most formidable rappers of his generation. But despite disappearing off the face of the earth briefly, he is certainly back to carry on where he left off in 2014.
After a two year break from music, the former Boyz N Da Hood member returned with a bang by releasing the long awaited 'Recovery' mixtape. Fans of the Atlanta rapper can expect to hear the very recognisable tone and flow that Zoe brings to all his music over dark and murky beats plus added controversy. Two of the most notable tracks from the album contain references to the popular R&B artists Drake and Rihanna. Zoe goes on to saying that he 'could be your man like Drake' and referencing an unmentioned woman who is a 'freak like Rihanna'.
It's hard to know what to expect from the 31-year-old's live performances, but you can get an idea from the content of his music. Due to his haitus, he has only appeared live sporadically over the last few years but when he did perform, Zoe always had audacious elements on set that added to the atmosphere. This included anything from half naked women on stage to firing champagne into the crowd from the bottle. You can always expect something crazy to happen at a Gorilla Zoe gig.
