Gilberto was born in New York City, New York, US on 12 May 1966; however, she grew up in Rio de Janerio, Brazil. Her parents are renowned bossa nova pioneers João Gilberto and Miúcha, both collaborators of the great Stan Getz. They are also of Brazilian descent, but were living in New York City around the time of their daughter’s birth. Her uncle, Chico Buarque is also an incredibly talented singer and songwriter. Provided Bebel’s strong musical background it is no surprise that she started sining at a very young age. Bebel was constantly surrounded by music growing up and became acquainted with several of her parents’ musical friends such as David Byrne, Caetano Veloso, and Stan Getz, the later whom she would go on to perform with at Carnegie Hall when she was only 9 years old.
Her first official self-titled EP came out in 1986. She recorded this EP with Cazuza, a fellow musician and former band member of Barao Vermelho. Shortly after Cazuza’s passing in 1990 Bebel moved from Brazil to Manhattan, New York. With her move to New York she participated in the high profile project “Red Hot + Rio” alongside artists such as Everything but the Girl, Maxwell, Ryuichi Sakamoto, Stereolab, Sting, David Byrne, and George Michael.
Since Bebel’s move to the city she went on to be featured as a guest singer on various albums. Some including experimental electronic acts like Amon Tobin and Thievery Corporation, mainstream smooth jazz artists such as Kenny G, and even No Wave artists like Arto Lindsay. For her 2000 breakthrough album “Tanto Tempo” Bebel took in the diverse musical landscape of New York, adopting the sounds of urban life while staying attuned to classic samba music. “Tanto Tempo” proved to be a smash hit in clubs and made Bebel one of the best-selling Brazilian artists in the United States since the 1960s.
Bebel released two more albums under the Ziriguiboom label: her 2004 self-titled album and her 2007 “Momento” album. Her next album “All in One” was released on Verve Records in 2009 and saw a slight departure from her previous electronica sound heading instead for a more traditional and organic sound.
Bebel’s music has been featured in many films and television series such as “Eat Pray Love”, “Next Stop Wonderland”, “Bubble”, “Closer”, “Six Feet Under”, “Nip/Tuck” and the animated movie “Rio” for which she also lent her voice for the character Eva. Her next album “Tudo” was released on 13 June 2014 and is a continuation of her modernized bossa nova style. The album was produced by Mario Caldato a sound engineer known for his work with the Beastie Boys and contains cover songs such as Neil Young’s “Harvest Moon” and Jobim’s “Vivo Sonhando”.

Brazilian pop is a genre of music that moderately interested me. That was until I encountered Bebel Gilberto, who completely and wholeheartedly converted me to the music. I’m lost for words after seeing her live, just wow! I have listened to her music for a few years, and love the chilled out vibe and some of her title tracks, so when I saw that she was touring, I thought why not!
She started with some of the hit tracks from All in One, which all seemed to go down very well with the audience! Everyone was swaying and singing along, and her dedication to the songs made everyone even more immersed in the moment. She has really strong vocals, but on her recordings you really take the live band for granted, and when you see them perform live it takes you to a whole new level of insane talent. Watching the musicians power through incredibly complex chords with ease is so refreshing.
The informal setting of the venue was perfect for her style, sliding through octaves, it was great to sit back in the jazzy setting and take it all in. Maybe her music is a little bit of an acquired taste, but it’s an example of pure talent, one you don’t want to miss!
Bebel Gilberto, is the Brazilian popular singer who endorses her Bossa Nova roots. She has travelled around a lot in her life, which evidently gives her music a lot of flavour no doubt. Keeping everything so fresh and exciting to experience in a live situation. Growing up with music all around her has definitely helped too. Her career spans thirty plus years and she is still making music to this day. This performance tonight is an eagerly anticipated show, as she doesn’t frequent our country all that much.
She struts onto the stage with her fantastic stage presence, her natural rhythm and fun exuberance filling this venue, lighting up the atmosphere with a single smile. “Momento” is such a fantastic opener seeing everyone in dancing, there is a moment in the middle section where some of the more seasoned dance couple dance the argentine tango, a very complex and sophisticated motion, leaving every single person including Gilberto in awe. “Azul” is the stripped down song of the set, seeing everyone stop for three minutes and just take it all in.
Ms. Gilberto put on an admirable performance, despite an inordinate number of attendees who insisted on talking and filming non-stop throughout the entire show (despite her polite requests to refrain from both). Using just an accompanying acoustic guitarist, the duet blended fine vocals with soothing music that made for an entertaining evening.
The set-list was well chosen, highlighting a number of her more popular tunes as well as covers of Radiohead's "Creep" and the Eurythmics' "Sweet Dreams". As regards the former, Ms. Gilberto specifically targeted the aforementioned rude attendees, to the delight of the rest of the crowd.
The Brighton Music Hall was a good venue, offering decent acoustics and many opportunities to clearly view the performers. There were no seats, leaving attendees free to roam the floor and select numerous vantage points.
A joy for the eyes and ears. Bebel was in London this weekend promoting her new album, 'Tudo'. It was lovely to hear such high quality music in a live venue. Performing against a backdrop of beautiful lights, Bebel dazzled the audience with her voice and gentle swaying in her long, flowing dress. Highlights of the evening for me included 'Somewhere Else' from the new album, Bossa Nova classic 'So Nice' and her own hits 'Simplesmente' and 'Aganju', the latter being performed as an encore. This was one of my first live concert experiences, and I knew the Latin songstress would deliver an exceptional experience. I highly recommend Bebel Gilberto!
Great show by a highly seasoned artist. Repeated complaints from the stage about sound system were a little distracting, but perhaps she’s a perfectionist. She’s music royalty - I do wish she’d done more of her father’s songs - but what she did sing in her short set was wonderful.
One disappointment with the venue - our tickets were for 8 pm but they added another show and moved ours to 7pm. We arrived at 7:20 expecting to eat, relax and enjoy the show. Instead we were “those people,” arriving late and disrupting the audience’s pleasure being shown to our seats.
I saw Bebel in Evanston (Chicago) in July. I loved every moment of that show. She can be funny, quirky, seductive, silly--and always, always, that voice. Soulful, satiny, she fills every note with passion and yearning .... When she sings Tanto Tempo live, one simple note -- eou -- floats out into the air with such longing ... it trembles slightly ... it's heartbreaking.
And I literally wept at the beauty of her version of Harvest Moon. I've never been so moved by any song at any concert, ever.
I can't wait for her to return to Chicago to weep again.
TRIPLE AAA - ABSOLUTELY AWESOME AMAZING But I have to submit 30 words to get published... lalalalala lalalala lalalalala xoxoxoxo
Bless Bebel and her band... Sorry, wanted to be as simple and sweet as Bebel herself. An honor to be with her.
Absolutely fabulous concert! Bebel sang most of the songs a capella with support of a gitarist, she was up close and very personal especially with her stories about her life and family. She is fantastically talented and has a beautiful voice.
Very good performance from Bebel. Sound and lighting very good. I would have liked another half hour of showtime but for the price of admission, show time was sufficient.
Food and service were very good.
Amazing intimate venue , Bebel was incredible as a singer and a personality . Very entertaining and engaging with the audience. The lighting at the venue added to the ambience and was a magical evening
