It’s no secret that the greatest art sometimes comes out of the greatest pain, and for Mikey Maramang, it was the passing of his father that truly galvanised him into writing music. He spent a lot of his adolescence and early adulthood dabbling with it, playing the drums in garage bands with his friends but when the unthinkable happened, writing and recording music became Maramang’s safe haven.
Like it has been for many others, writing music became his form of therapy, and it allowed him to deal with what he was feeling in the healthiest way possible. However, while most bedroom producers would be content to let the music speak for itself, Maramang is different. He’s equally as prolific as a lot of his contemporaries but what he has over a lot of them is an extremely busy touring schedule and a live show that’s honed to perfection.
He has toured all over his native country, most of Europe and it shows no sign of letting up any time soon. Blackbird Blackbird is a very new breed of artist, one who has the technology and the talent to realize any creative endeavour he wants to experiment with. While that might lead to self-indulgence from most artists, Maramang is a very unique talent in many ways, so we don’t have to worry about that, and I’m sure we’ll all be hearing a lot more of him in the very new future.

Blackbird Blackbird – aka Mikey Maramag from San Francisco – is a very talented chap, both as a songwriter-producer and as a singer. His music is an interesting take on electronica: he layers dreamy, melodic house music with Caribou-esque folktronica and enough glitches to have him loosely labelled as witch-house. In fact, the first time I saw him was at a witch-house themed night supporting XXYYXX. He was wicked, energetically pushing out his bleepy, textured productions then coming in front of his decks to take to the vocals and sing through airy, distorted effects (and lots of echo!). The best thing was the Maramag would headbang enthusiastically in between verses, which was brilliant to watch as it jarred with his chilled, psychedelic electro pop songs. At this particular night, he beefed up the relevantly ambient nature of his music with snippets of techno and pacier house music, which often came to euphoric crescendos.
What really sets Blackbird Blackbird apart is that aforementioned folktronica element – as much as I hate that term, there is something of an indie-folk nature to his music, with flourishes of surf guitar, layered acoustic strumming, etc, which is a nice change from the purely synthetic approach by most producers of this sort. I’ve noticed his most recent releases feature even more guitars and indie vocals, which is definitely a good thing!
San Francisco based electro musician Mikey Maramag otherwise known as Blackbird Blackbird has gained a reputation for whimsy and excellence in equal measure since his career began back in the 2012 with the release of the singles 'All' and 'Keep It Up'. Since then he has gone on to forge a career of dream pop synth that has gone down fantastically with fans and critics alike.
He tours tirelessly with an ever-developing live show which includes bizarre visuals and spanning soundscapes. Taking inspiration from fellow contemporaries James Blake and Caribou, the musician shows promise to be the next big thing in the world of psychedelic electro and he has a live show that more than backs up these lofty comparisons. The crowd is enthralled and involved throughout as they watch on in awe as Mikey recreates 'Pure' and 'It's A War' in a way unimaginable when considering the complexity of the recorded material. A brilliant artist with a bubbling amount of talent and potential.
Palisades was an interesting location in Brooklyn, very easy setup. The audio was very bad the first 4 songs, as a jack wasn't plugged properly. Even though the sound was very strange anyway :-)
