Born in upstate New York, U.S. Seth Haley but now based out of Princeton, New Jersey, U.S. the musician bought himself a pair or turntables in 2000, which began his musical experimentation. Haley began with spinning drum and bass, then decided to move on to something more melodic, and after discovering Boards of Canada was inspired to creative something downtempo.
After settling with the name Com Truise, after a number of other monikers, the musician released his debut EP “Cyanide Sisters” in 2010. The release was issued through the blog and digital distributer AM DISCS and exposed his signature 80’s sound, laden with synths, heavy bass and funk grooves, what Haley has described as synth-wave slow-motion funk. After signing with Ghostly International, the label rereleased “Cyanide Sisters” in 2011 and subsequently released the three track “Fairlight” in anticipation of his full length debut.
On top of releasing his own material Haley continues to issue a handful of remixes including Neon Indian’s “Sleep Paralysist”, Daft Punk’s “Encom Part 2”, Twin Shadow’s “Castles in the Snow”, and a remix of Kings of Leon’s “The End”.
Ghostly International released Haley’s full-length debut “Galactic Melt” in June 2011 and its follow-up “In Decay” in July 2012. “In Decay” was a download-only compilation album of previously unreleased material, followed a month later by his track “Chemical Legs” which he contributed Adult Swim Singles Program. In February 2014 Haley released the EP “Wave 1” which continued the same 80’s music production as his previous releases, grounded in sci-fi sounds and slow-building analogue textures.
Seth Haley is the mastermind behind Com Truise, putting out the glazed over polished melodies and beats that would make one want to get up and dance. Com Truise has a playful, lighthearted style to his music as might be expected from a person who decides to name himself after a spoonerism on Tom Cruise’s name. Com Truise’s music is layered with lush, vibrant synths and is driven by the deep pulsing rhythms of the drums and bass. His music is highly inspired by 1980’s dance music and it has the tendency to wash over the audience, cleansing them in the purity of wonderful sounds that are created. Although Seth Haley commonly performs solo, he has more recently been touring with a live drummer, which gives more of a punch to the live performances.
Going to a Com Truise show is like going to a party. Loud dance music is blasted through the speakers and bright lights flash rapidly on stage. There is a screen in the back with bright, colorful geometric patterns strobing on the screen. Everyone in the venue is joyfully dancing to the music having been infected by its contagious catchiness. The music that Com Truise produces is of the highest clarity, managing to create smooth analog sounds that give the highest pleasure to the mind.
It is not difficult to tell that Seth Haley was a former art director. He has the innovative vision to create a magnificent performance filled with exciting lighting and visuals, and most importantly, stunning music.
