Although he’s dubbed as a rock singer, Hawksley Workman has some incredible indie/ singer songwriter ballads under his belt, and when he opened the show with his track Safe and Sound, it was then that I realised that he is an incredibly sincere musician, as well as an incredible pop and glam rock artist.
He played an awesome set with his band, and when he played No Beginning No End, he got everyone singing along with him by holding out the microphone and shouting ‘come on everybody’, which was incredible, as it made everyone feel super involved in the show. Workman’s guitar playing is even better live than I had previously though, and seeing his fingers dance gently over the fret board was wonderful, and a real showcase of his talent. The show was around 2 hours long, and he and the entire band maintained their high energy throughout the show, and held the audience in their hands from start to finish.
As well as the musical performances, the lighting and venue wee perfect and carefully thought out with the amps in perfect positions so that they sound balance was great throughout the whole auditorium. He put on a great varied show really demonstrating his talent, I’d definitely see him again.
Hawksley Workman took us to church. Literally. We packed into the pews inside tiny St. Pancras Old Church, put our beer in the hymnal racks (feeling vaguely guilty about it — would wine have been better?) and watched the man, with only his pianist "Mr Lonely," fill the place with music. In a decision that at least appeared to be last-second inspiration, he asked to have the sound system turned off, and he stepped forward to sing "Don't Be Crushed" with an unplugged piano and no microphone. I realized (as obviously Workman already had) that this was a space designed for acoustics. Designed for oratory and music. The crowd joined in, singing along quietly, and for a minute it felt like we WERE singing hymns — this group of like-minded strangers with a common love of music. Workman is electric to watch and funny as hell between songs. Fantastic show. Not quite like anything I've ever been to.
The show was pure joy. The music, the stories, Mr Lonely's sublime playing, Sarah Slean, Tom Power, and the best Christmas themed songs this side of Boney M - plus a couple of new gems from the upcoming album. I'm hoping Hawksley has a lot of tour dates in 2019.
Just a great night all and all. He was very charming with his story telling and sharing with the receptive audience. The show was in two parts without an opening band. The music was spot on and very enjoyable.
Middle of nowhere but worth the drive, everybody what top talent, good ole Canadian folk watching good ole Canadian folk, people cheered, sang along, got kinda rukus(SP?) A good time by all!
I've been seeing Hawksley Workman for over 20 years, and I just love his shows!!! He's an amazing singer and musician! I just wish he came to Kitchener-Waterloo and Stratford more often!!!
